help me pick an assistance exercise for deadlifting please

im doing the texas method, as outlined in starting strength.squatting 3 times a week, was deadlifting once a week on fridays, and i think it is starting to become taxing enough that i should alternate between an assistance exercise and a deadlift PR.

i am strong at the top, so i have to work the bottom. i also feel that i should strengthen my middle and lower back. my upper back never bends during the lift.

i am wondering if i should sub in front squats, platform deadlifts, snatch grip deads, reverse hypers, or RDLs.

i am thinking that front squats or platform deads would be best to increase quad strength, but do i really need extra quad work if im squatting 3 times a week?

maybe i should just do something less taxing like RDLs or reverse hypers and let the squat strength carry over.

or maybe i should just alternate power cleans and deadlift PRs on friday, since im power cleaning on every monday. it seems like i have enough posterior chain work as it is since im squatting 3 times a week and power cleaning every monday(and really light on wednesday)

any suggestions?

Are you squating heavy (ME - Maximum Effort) 3 times a week? If so try a DE (Dynamic Effort - 10 sets of 3 @ 60% 1RM) and RE (Recovery Effort - 2 sets of 12 @ 50% 1RM) day maybe.

I always liked doing RDL or good mornings after heavy sqauts. At times I have supersetted RDL's and leg presses after heavy squats. I typically reduced the volume on squats when doing leg presses after. I typically would do something like squat: x12, x12, x8, x5, x5 (where the first 3 sets were warm up and the last 2 sets were pretty close to failure); RDL (135x12, 225x12, 315x8, 405x6x2) superset with leg press (x12,x12,x12,x8) increasing weight each set until the final set is near failure.

Till you have something like
- Squat 4 wheels
- Bench 3 wheels
- Deads 5 wheels

follow Rippetoe's suggestions as laid out in the book. The Texas method is well laid out for intermediate lifters so use it and the templates laid out on the .
