Weight-Loss Help for an extremely picky eater!

I am 29 years old and am still a picky eater. Yes it is embarrassing at times, but I am the way I am. I don't like veggies, condiments, or ethnic foods. I eat everything plain. Meaning if I order a chicken sandwich, it is just chicken and bread. The same goes for cold cuts. A ham sandwich is ham and bread, if I am feeling daring I'll add cheese! I cannot even begin to elaborate all of my stupid little eating habits. I had a couple of suggestions in the newbie section....

"Meat and Potatoes wont kill you. Just dont have it every meal. What about other proteins like egg whites or cottage cheese? Fruits? Protein Pancakes are great(Even if you are picky) Green Giant also has some frozen mixed veges that are already seasoned that you may like to try"

"In general, and this is by no means a complete list, here are some 'clean' foods:

Protein - chicken breast, turkey breast, pork tenderloin, fish, lean ground beef, flank or top round steaks, whey protein, eggs, low/no fat dairy (these can go in the carbs category too)

Fats - natural peanut butter, fish, fish oil pills, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, avocados, flax

Carbs - fruits, veggies, oatmeal, rice, whole grain/high fiber bread, wraps, whole wheat pasta, yams"

Let me cut that down for you just to get an idea of how insane I am......
No fish..AT ALL. I hate fish. No avocados or yams. And I do not even know what flax or whey protein are. So knowing me, I won't consume it.
Veggies are out, cottage cheese makes me gag, and what is a protein pancake? Also, I just now started eating salad, and the only kind I eat is like the type Olive Garden serves you, except I pick off the tomatoes and stuff. So basically that leaves me with a bowl full of iceburg and some Italian dressing.

I am really not saying all this to be whiny or be a pain. I just want to know if there is anyone else out there like me? Surely there has to be...
Please, and help would be greatly appreciated.

wow.... you are a picky eater. i dunno with me i'm not very picky but there are foods i didn't like the taste of.. and well i just kept mixing them in with other foods until i could hardly taste the difference anymore and then i would eat it alone. lol i dunno if that's a nice thing to do or not, but it worked for me.

When's the last time you actually tried some of the foods you say you don't eat? Tastes change over time...

What is it that you don't like about those foods? Texture? Smell?

There are foods I do not like and choose not to eat, but it's more about preparation than anything else- I can't be in the same room as anything with margarine in it -it just grosses me out -and mayonaisse on sandwiches isn't much better... I also don't like anyyhing that's heavily sauced or disguised...

I've never described myself as a picky eater, I'm fussy... but there's nothing I won't try at least twice, and I will try something again at a later point to make sure my taste buds havent' changed.

How old are you and what's your living situation? Do you still live with youor family or do you do your own cooking? if you're an adult, then start being a little experimental... take a cooking class to broaden your horizons...

I've found thru personal experience, and this was backed up by a book abut food I read recently by a chef, that people who say they don't like something, vegetables, etc, often change their mind if what they're being served has been roasated... my own personal anecdote on that one -i made it probably 40 years convinced I hated broccoli.. because the only broccoli I knew was the frozen kind that was boiled in a sauce pan til it was dead... i got myself some fresh broccoli a lot of garlic, and some olive oil -and roasted it - and now broccoli is one of my favorite things...

Not to be discouraging, but what you describe sounds like some type of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). You seriously may want to consider seeing a shrink about this before your health deteriorates any more.

Most people (like myself) were picky eaters as children, and I know I was probably one of the worst of them, but around 19-20y/o I started trying new foods and now I can't think of a single food that I do not like (maybe with the exception of boiled okra with no seasoning).

You've probably heard this a million times, but getting your fruits/veggies is essential to maintaining healthy weight loss. There's no way around it. So, I would suck it up and force down the green stuff or consider psychotherapy. P.S. I didn't mean to sound condescending if this msg came off that way. Cheers- Marcus

I used to be picky with my sandwiches a little while ago. Then I realized if I pile them with Tomatoes, Lettuce, Onions, Pickles, etc. it will keep me fuller longer. I found to help with taste try salt and pepper and any other seasoning you can think of.

Actually, it's funny that you started this topic because the other day I was reading a research paper about "supertasters". These individuals taste certain flavors more intensely that your standard person. I suppose the question to be asked is if your dislike is a texture or flavor issue (or both). For example, I love tomato sauce, ketchup, and cooked tomatoes. However, I can't stand raw tomatoes.

Malificent is dead on (again). I used to hate brocolli and califlower when I was young, but now I have no problem eating them. Taste buds die over time so your pallette changes as well. Try a spice you've never had before to jazz up your menu. You might like the flavor.

I am 23 and was a very picky eater like you up until last year. If i got a burger it was just meat and cheese, i hated veggies except carrots and celery, and cottage cheese made me sick if i just looked at it. It basically took an intervention from my fiancee to make me start trying new things. I realized that I was more stubborn than anything else. I had made the decision that I did not like certain things, so I would refuse to give them a chance.
Ok, so anyway I started really slow... just one bite here and there..... try mixing in one piece of broccoli or zucchini with pasta sauce to get yourself introduced to the taste. After a while things started looking appealing/ smelling good, so I ate a little more. I LOVE asparigus and green beans now ( I roast them with lots of garlic). At first i could only eat one or two pieces, but now i chow down. It is a process, you cant force yourself to eat a whole load of veggies at once or you will get sick. Take it slow. I still dont have a taste for some foods, but i will keep trying.

I'm a bit of a picky eater to the point that my boyfriend gets frustrated with me, but I don't know. The only things I am picky about are: I don't like the texture of lima beans or black eyed peas, and I refuse to eat most dressings or condiments. This means no mayo, no tartar sauce, no horseradish, no mustard, and no salad dressing ever. I always assumed it was good not to want these kind of condiments. What's y'all's take?

wow - you sound just like me! i too am super finiky when it comes to how i like my food. for me - all diary is out (can't stand it), meat is like eating a solid brick, and my salads - basically consists of lettuce and tomato. oh and breads - no thanks.

BUT to make up for all this i've had to finally resort to taking supplimental drinks to at least get the daily nutrition, since i hate vitamins as well (either gross smell or gross tasting).

:)

I love tomatoes cos they make my skin healthier. I've heard that they contain alot of vitamin E which help melt fat, dunno whether it is true, but I still love tomatoes
