Hi. I am on a mission to lose 60 pounds. My last physical was a disaster. I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre diabetes and am WAY overweight. I have let myself get very unhealthy. I work a very stressful time consuming job. I want to get healthy for my children. I want to be around for awhile yet. I have already lost 5 pounds but have a long way to go. I am just looking for positive support and some people in similar situations. Thank you and have a great day.

Hello Arami. Well, honestly I cut down my eating, started using lose it app, and started working out everyday. I was eating like a pig. When I am stressed my go to wasn't drugs or alcohol..it was sweets. Cookies, candy, junk, etc. And I quit drinking on the weekends. Also my wife and I started working with a trainer once a week to get a kick start. It has been hard but I feel I am committed and want to do it for my family.

Hello Jake and welcome to the forum.

I can appreciate the reasons behind why you may consider the challenge so difficult, since the goal seems such a long way in the distance.

However, by developing a sense of perspective, you remove some of the pressure that you may have placed upon yourself; the excess weight wasn't accumulated overnight, so it's not going to be lost overnight either. The sooner you accept this fact, the sooner you'll begin to enjoy the challenge you've set.

Again, I can appreciate that you wish to see instant results for your effort, perhaps, feeling as though you should have lost more weight than you currently have, but over 15000Kcal will have been expended through a mixture of calorie reduction and exercise, in order to allow you to achieve the less of loss so far.

Upon reading what you've so far written, Jake, I'm looking at the positive changes you've so far made, changes that will benefit you in both the immediate and longer term. Moreover, due to the fact that both you and your wife are now working with a trainer, you'll both be making physiological changes (those that you can't see) that'll improve your respective levels of fitness quicker than you'd probably imagine.

Rather than focusing upon the negatives of the challenge ahead of you (which will become easier), focus your attention upon your achievements thus far.

Thank you for the thoughtful and kind words. I appreciate it. I know I got a long way to go but I will celebrate the small victories in pursuit of the large goal at hand.

You're welcome, Jake. Don't worry if weekly loss only amounts to 3-4lbs for example, since it's an amount that's both sensible and sustainable. Over the weeks/months, it'll begin to accumulate.

Has your trainer spoken to you about things such as BMR & TDEE and the importance of introducing a daily deficit from your TDEE, in order to ensure that fat is utilised as energy?

No. The trainer never did. He meant well but he was pretty young and seems to have a lot to learn. I am very focused on calorie counting right now. It's working pretty good. I am not starving myself so that is good. Still would love to tear into a giant rack of ribs dripping in sauce but my cravings are getting better. There were a few nights I craved sugar so bad I couldn't sleep. I am sleeping better than ever now though.

Although you still suffer from regular cravings, Jake, don't beat yourself up over it; your body is simply adjusting to not receiving something that it’s become used to.

A wholesome diet doesn't mean that you need to omit your favourite foods, either. Granted, regularity of consumption and portion size may need to be taken into consideration, but you don't have to wholly exclude them. By continuing to include favoured foods alongside a largely wholesome diet, you'll grow to understand that the journey towards your goal isn't as bleak as it may appear.

Moreover, by continuing to include favoured dishes into your diet as weight is lost, once you've attained your goal, you'll be far better placed when it comes to maintaining your goal weight. To some degree, although your goal is weight loss, you can still continue to have your cake and eat it (just not as regularly as you'd like).

It's also good to hear that you're calorie counting, since it'll serve you well upon your journey. However, don't construe the activity as a negative.

Regardless of respective goals, calorie counting remains an important part of achieving those aims, to ensure that the body is provided with optimum nutrition.

As for the trainer, I’m sorry to learn that he didn’t explain the science behind weight management alongside regular exercise. Nonetheless, successful weight management is something that you can accomplish upon your own by ascertaining your BMR and TDEE.

By introducing a daily deficit of 500Kcal from your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure), you’ll continue to enjoy weight loss, week upon week, as you draw nearer to your eventual goal.

Hi Jake!
As a new member to a new member, I'd like to say hi :)
I'm about half way along my weight loss journey, and making some healthy changes to my lifestyle, and I am trying to learn to enjoy the new changes and see them as positive and fun experiences, instead of awful chores that must be endured to achieve my goals. It's pretty hard to get my head around it, and I've felt my motivation wavering a little of late, which is something I'm tackling with a little will power and resolve (digging down deeeeeep for that!)
But good on you for making the decision! That's most of the hard work done! We can't change if we don't want to, so wanting it means you're headed in the right direction. Now it's just a matter of putting one foot in front of the other (literally and figuratively).
Best of luck, Jake. We can do it :)

Thank you for the kind words. I have been going on my treadmill and burning 500 calories everyday then my wife and I have been doing..let me see if I say this right metabolic resistance training(?) for 30 mins every other day. This will be our first week doing it without the trainer. My wife and I seem to do just fine without the trainer so I feel we can do it without him.we just had to quit buying junk and bringing it in the house. The Lose it app is working good as well. It puts you on a calorie allowance then you just log what you eat or drink and it tells you where you are at. It says I will reach my goal in September. My goal is to get below 200 pounds again. It's been over ten years since I have been there. I am ex military and used to be able to run 6 miles every morning before breakfast. I don't think I will ever get back to that but damn I hope so. Thanks again to you all for the kind words of encouragement.

Also..seeing how I have now had 2 cups of coffee and have woken up. Oh..I drink my coffee black now by the way. I used to dump half and half and sugar in it. Haha. Yeah. I had every bad habit you can think of. Does anyone else ever have this mental thing where you justify your bad habits? Meaning I work A LOT. I mean usually 50 to 60 hours a week. When I would work a twelve hour day I would always be like "Screw it, I need energy so I am going to drink 3 cokes" or "I don't have a lot of time to hell with it, I am driving through Culvers and getting the double butter burger with fries and cheese sauce." I do that too many times. Or when I would get home I would eat the snack cakes we keep for my kids lunches then listen to them bitch in the morning about where they went. I would just feel I was justified in doing that. I know it's bullshit but why do I do that? Anyone else do that or am I the only crazy asshole that does that?

Hey Jake,

I'm new to the forum myself but I know what It's like working 50-60 hours a week and the "screw it" sensation. I am a truck driver, so I spend all day on the road passing fast food joints. I used to eat fast food quite a bit, but I've gotten away from it for years now. The best thing to do IMO is to bring snacks/meals with you to work, and stick to only the foods you brought with you. I LOVE CocaCola, but I very rarely have it anymore..just because I know that it has nothing beneficial to offer to me other than the taste. A snack cake every now and then wont kill you, but try and find something healthier that you enjoy eating as your "dessert." For me, it's been all about will power. Eventually you won't care for the things you currently desire, at least in my experience. Good luck!!

Hi jake I hope everything is going well and that you have a good day.
These are my suggestions for you:

1. Be Realistic And Start Slow.
2. Eat as healthy as possible.
3. Avoid take-aways and sweets.
4. Include lots of fruit and veg in your diet.
5. Exercise at least 5 days a week.
6. Avoid taking sugary drinks. Have water instead.
7. find a ways to stay motivated

good luck

Awesome news Jake! One thing I've learned to is dont get frustrated with yourself if your weight fluctuates a little time to time, Ive "gained" 5lbs overnight before, just for things to level out the next day. Keep at it!!!
