Hi I just joined, looking for some support. I was pretty fit most of my life until a few years ago when I really started packing on weight. Looking to take off some of what I've gained and happy to get any advice. I just started doing cardio which is difficult but I'm doing it.

Hey Fitz, welcome! This is a great place to get advice and support.

I suggest you start a diary on the Weight Loss Diary page (https://weight-loss.fitness.com/forums/weight-loss-diary.9/ ) and tell us more about yourself and your goals. That is a great way to get started here.

Best of luck to you!

Hi, Fitz & welcome to the forum. Rob has suggested starting a thread in the diary section of the forum. It's very active & very supportive. What you eat is the most important thing with weight-loss. Finding something that is sustainable long-term & suits you is the best option. Cardio will get easier as you lose weight. Once again, welcome :)

.... I was pretty fit most of my life until a few years ago when I really started packing on weight. ....
some questions that would help to answer... how old are you? what is your current height/ weight? what is your living situation (dependent/ independent?) ...i.e. how much control do you have over your food? any medical problems?

Good questions, thanks. I'm 5'6" 230 lbs. I live independently and choose all my own food. I have high blood pressure and cholesterol, taking medications for both.

Hello @Fitz999 ! That is really good you decided to achieve your goal with support here!
How old are you? How often do you do cardio?
Do you have special meal plan? Do you eat at home every meal?

I'm 42. I literally just started working out so only done it twice. I'm aiming for 3 times a week to start. I don't have a meal plan but I should probably make one. I both cook at home and eat out.

Yes, it would be good to have a meal plan or at least directions what to eat and how to eat.
I would say that cardio 3 times a week is enough, but I would add some stretch exercises 2 times a week.
Good stretch works for body pretty well if you want to lose weight or gain weight. There is a lot of videos on the internet. You can find and see there how to do that.
I can give you advice about diet if you want, but you should tell more about your daily meals. Let me know if you are interested or you prefer to just go to nutritionist :)

I would love advice. I'm brand new at this so I'll listen to anyone who has experience. I'm starting my meal diary this weekend so once I do that I'll have a better idea of what my diet is like. I've got a feeling there will be some obvious different choices I can be making. Something about my eating habits landed me here lol

Yes, that would be great!

You can make a 3 days diary of what you eat. Remember it should be what you eat normally, not when you are doing special post or when you are trying to pretend eat better during write your diary :)
What you should write is:
  • totally everything that you eat, drink or snack (even small things)
  • the size of portions (I mean 1 apple; 2 sandwiches; 1/2 glass of tea with 1 tablespoon of sugar; etc.)
  • exact hour when you've eaten
  • information about your waking up and going seep hours
After the weekend we will know more about your eating habits and we'll can comment it ;)

Great, thanks so much for your help. I'm glad I finally decided to reach out. Trying to handle my weight on my own was clearly not working lol. I will definitely eat normally. It's the only way I'll find out what I'm doing wrong. I do a lot of passive eating so it'll be interesting to see what I take in throughout the day and actually be conscious of it.

Hello, Fitz! Good to meet you. :)
I've got a feeling there will be some obvious different choices I can be making.
I bet there is! One really common trap is drinking choice - soft drinks and fruit juice, especially. Anyway, whatever it is - enjoy the fun of finding out, and of getting fitter!
