Hello to all,

my name is Cam Mcmillen and I am 21 years old and I weigh 205lbs. My goal is to weigh 160lbs.

Brief History: I use to be a good athlete when I was 15-16. This was during my junior high school, so we had lots of activities to do in gym, which kept me in a healthy shape. My weight was 171lbs. I started to gain weight slowly after that.
In gr. 10 I climbed to 185lbs. and in college's first year I was 226lbs. then in the second year I got a job at a mechanic's shop. this was a lot of physical labor, so I dropped down to 195lbs in 6 months. and then I gained another 10lbs in 6 months after I stopped working.
So right now I stand at 205lbs.

What I did two weeks ago: I went by this book called ABS diet. I followed the nutrition schedule in it. I mean I didn't eat exactly what was listed in the book, but I ate the same amount of calories. which was around 1200-1600 calories per day. I also did cardio on elliptical trainer where I use to burn around 500 calories per day. I did that for a week.

After the week, I didn't see any results in the weight loss (I was 200lbs here) After the week was over, I started eating normal amount of calories per day (not more than required) and I also stopped the cardio. after this week I weighed myself and my weight was 205lbs. I have no idea how I gained the extra 5 pounds.

Where I stand now:
Height: 5 foot 11 inches
Weight: 205lbs
Age: 21 Years
Goal: 175lbs by December 20th

I have heard that if you weigh alot (ex: 260-300+) loosing 20-25lbs is easy, and quick. but if you starting weight is less than 260lbs or around that then loosing 20-25lbs is a bit of challenge. Now I'm not sure how much truth is in that, to me it feels about right. Because I have been trying for 3 months to loose weight but it won't budge from 200-205lbs.

Now my goal is to loose 30lbs by the lets say end of December. that's around 13 weeks. (91 days). that means in order to loose 30lbs I'll have to shed 2.30lbs per week.

This is where I need your help guys. I heard loosing more than 2 pounds per week isn't healthy (correct?).

so what can I do, let me know, share you experience.

any comments or suggestions will be really appreciated.
thanks
CAM.

First of all there are lots of stickies on these forums that have a ton of helpful advice about starting weight loss. Some of them contain a lot of useful information and they are well worth the read. Check the Newcomers section for some good ones about starting (rant about basic concepts sums up quite a lot for me).

The first thing that stuck out to me is that you are/have not been eating enough while trying to lose. 1200-1600 calories/day in my opinion isn't enough for a male. I have lost 88lb and the whole time I have been eating a lot more then that (my situation was very similiar, put weight on in college due to no activity). If you try and starve yourself you cannot hope to stick to it.

The 2nd thing is that after 1 week you gave up which says to me that this ABS diet isn't sustainable. You need to realise that after you lose the weight if you go back to current habits then your weight will come back. You need to find a way to lose weight which you can stay on easily, even after you have lost weight. Don't look for quick solutions, look for changes you can make to your lifestyle, eating habits, etc.

The last thing I wanted to mention is that you have set a very strict goal on yourself. Off the top of my head thats like 1200 calorie a day deficiet needed to lose the weight which wouldn't be easy. Personally I wouldn't aim for more then 2lb loss a week. I don't know much about health risks associated with weight loss but from personal experience it is much easier to lose if you set realistic goals.

You heard correctly. Losing more than 2 pounds a week isn’t healthy. Rapid weight loss often leads to rapid weight regain. The ultimate goal is to keep the weight off. To do that, you need to maintain a lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise. The has a calculator to determine the daily calories you need to maintain your weight. Subtract 500 calories from the calculation to determine the daily calories you need to lose weight.

Best wishes on your continued weight loss efforts.

Hello I need some advice on my nutrition.
I exercise almost everyday. Here is my schedule:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Burn 700-800 Calories on Elliptical trainer. Exercises (3 sets, 12 reps/set): Biceps (25lb/bicep), Abs (60lb-80lb), Chest (75lb), Triceps (80lb), and some more.
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday: Burn 400-500 Calories on Elliptical trainer

Eating plan:
Breakfast: 500 Calories
Snack 1: 300 Calories
Lunch: 450 Calories
Snack 2: 250 Calories
Dinner: 500 Calories
Snack 3: 300 Calories
Total : 2000 Calories/Day

I am aiming to loose 25-26lbs in 15 weeks. So I need to loose 1.6lb/week. this is healthy (over 2lb/s is unhealthy).

So are there any adjustments I need to make to help me loose weight more effectively?

thanks
