Heartrate

Hi all,

Im new to the forum, just been lurking for a while!!

I got a HR monitor the other day, and have been using it while jogging. I feel I am reasonably fit, not super fit by any means, but ive been doing martial arts for a few years, the occasional run etc. Im about 5' 11 and 12.5stone so not overweight.

Sorry about the life story, anyway, I looked on a chart (linked somewhere from this forum) and it said my 75% HR is about 143, so I was aiming for this whilst jogging, the problem was I seemed to get to this ridiculosuly easy, my HR was going up to 180-185 and I wasnt feeling out of breath (still able to sing along to my MP3). Do you know why this is? Have I got an unhealthy heart? Should I start walking when my HR goes over 143ish?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Make sure you have a good and accurate reader. Best way to test is to compare its reading to taking one yourself. To take one yourself...
Place your index and middle fingers directly under your ear, then slide your fingers down until they are directly under your jawbone, pressing lightly. Start with zero on the first beat and count for 10 seconds then multiply by six. I say this cause when i first started working out my monitor was way higher than my actual rate.

You stated you can talk easy/sing along and thats actually another test of being in a good heart range. If you get lightheaded or dizzy then that is a sign of overworking yourself and you should slow down.

Here is a great place to learn some proper info about heart rates.

As always though if you feel sick or just concerned about this then go to a doctor.

Great, thanks for the advice, I will check my HR when I get home and compare it to what my monitor says.

Great site as well, thanks for the link.
