Heartrate monitoring?

I know there's some kind of manual way to check, but that seems kind of distracting especially when you're working hard running so what can I do about finding out my heart rate in the middle of a run?

I don't have a monitor right now, so I ask, if I don't feel winded at all during a fairly good run, is that a bad sign? My legs are pretty tired as hell for some reason, but my breathing "effort" is REALLY low compared to when I used to run before. I guess the question is, is breathing rate or how much I'm gasping for air any indication of how hard my heart is working (heart rate)?

You just might have a good VO2 max. You can't check your HR in the middle of a run because you have to time yourself. Take a break every four minutes and give yourself a 15 second check.

If your legs are getting tired, it's possible due to lactic acid accumulation.
