Heart Rate Monitors

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I hope that I have chosen the appropriate category of the forum for this post.

Anyway, I'm a 42-year old guy who likes to exercise. I lift weights 3-4 times a week and try to do cardio exercise 2-3 times a week, too. Usually, my cardio workouts consist of either running (outside or on a treadmill), stationary bike, eliptical trainer, a climbing machine at my gym called Jacobs Ladder, or on rare occasion -- swimming.

For the past few years, I have been using a fairly basic Polar Heart Rate monitor for my cardio training. It recently started malfunctioning and I would like to get a new one. I would prefer one that does not require the chest strap -- rather only the wrist watch. However, I have heard that the ones without the chest straps are not as accurate and are very expensive.

Anyway, I would be grateful if any of you with knowledge could recommend any specific brands / models of heart rate monitors. In regards to my price range... Well, I'd prefer to spend less than USD$100, but I am flexible if it is required. Most importantly, I want to get one that will function well and is durable. I don't require many complex functions etc...

Thanks....

Hi arncap! You might want to check ePulse Strapless Heart Rate Monitor, Polar RS 100, Cardiosport Ultima PC, Garmin Forerunner 405, and the Bowflex basic heart rate monitor. These are all strapless heart rate monitoring device so you might find a device that will suit you well. I agree, strapless heart rate monitors are easy to use and is not complicated at all.

I read a lot of good reviews on the Mio Motiva. I received one a year ago and my only complaint is that the back light turns off before it gives you a heartrate...so when I run in the dark, which is mostly when I do it so I can stay cool, I can't read where my heart rate is. During workouts, it seems to do well.

One note, I haven't tested it against a monitor with a chest band so I can't be 100% sure that it is measuring properly

Best suggestion is to go to amazon and read the reviews on several heart rate monitors. I steered clear of the Bowflex because of the reviews.

Price might have a lot to do with what you get as well.
