Heart rate monitor

hmm maybe this was a better place to post this. im 32 5'10 211 ( i was 225 a couple weeks ago). for the first time in my life im losing weight and im not doing some kookoo diet. eating healthy and working out hard. anyway im very very curious about how many calories i burn. in particular during bikram yoga. when i plug my weight and time into the calorie counter websites they all say 1450 cal which seems like a huge number. then i read that it doesnt burn calories at all but just makes you sweat. from what ive read the most convenient and accurate way to calcutae calories burned is a HRM (please tell me if you know another way).
so now im looking for a HRM that calculates calories burned, is there any you guys can recommend?? the ones i see have those chest straps r there ones that dont? thanks all.

Chest strap models give truer readings. My preference is polar.

Yeah definantly the ones with the straps are better, I know the strap's annoying, but it's worth it. I have a polar F4, one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Polar

I have the polar FT80 its my 3rd polar watch, i agree best fitness investment i ever made. There are now compression shirts made with connections in them so the transmitter stays put and you can eliminate the aanoying straps.

I bought a really inexpensive HRM, a Timex T5G971. I bought it for around $60 at Amazon.com. I got tired of buying Polar units every couple of years, because they never seem to last. The Timex also has a replaceable battery in the chest strap and calculates calories.

Just about to make a thread on this :p

Urm, same situation, looking for a fairly cheap accurate HRM, preferably chest strap for more accurate results, haven't a clue on models :/

I like Polar as well. But, pay no attention to the calories burned on a HRM - the numbers are junk. While they may take into account your age and weight, depending on the model, they don't take into account your fitness.

For example: If a fit cyclist cycles at 18 mph he/she is burning minimal calories / hour (maybe 400). If a less fit person cycles at 18 mph, he/she will burn a lot more calories.

Instead, train in heart rate zones.

I would suggest the Sportline 960 for a good quality watch that isn't going to break the bank. Its strapless, but I've always found it to be quite accurate.

I have a Polar F4 and it seems to be really good. Used it in Body attack this morning and I now know how hard (or not) I work out :)
