heart rate monitor choices

Hello,
I'm new here and want to lose about 40 lbs. I've purchased a Polar HR monitor and have been exercising 45-60 min 5 days wk. keeping my HR between 65%-85%. Burning fat is my priority and burning more cals than I consume is my plan for wt loss. I plan to incorporate a wt training routine beginning next wk. My Hr monitor also keeps track of my cal. burned. I've worn it all day a couple of days and have noticed that my cal burn for the entire day was only around 900 cal. with 400-500 being burned during my morn. exercise routine. My concern is that obviously I'm not moving/burning enough cal. throughout the rest of the day-post exercise. If I'm only burning a total of 1000 cal. per day and my total cal intake for wt loss is around 1800 cals/day., this is not a deficit which is required for wt loss. My questions for you experts are: Can I go by this cal burned number for accuracy even after my exercise-as it is keeping up with my HR all day, and if so, does this tell me that my metabolism could be very low, making it harder for me to lose the wt? What do you all recommend? Any advice or articles you could direct me to that would help explain this would be greatly appreciated. I've been navigating around this site today and can't seem to find the answers I'm looing for. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sandy, welcome to the forum. I don't know anything about the heart rate monitor so I couldn't give you any good advice. Where did you purchase it and how much was it? I would be curious to find out about myself, but I bet it's nowhere near yours. Again, welcome.

I purchased it here:

It was $99.95 Mine is the F6. This place had the best prices with Free S&H of any where else I found.

I'm considering a badass HRM but I'm not sure which one to get. Was hoping one of the trainers has alot of experience and could comment. I'm considering the Polar 625 or 725. I can't tell what the biggest differences are except for the fact that the 625 is more running oriented and is packaged with the foot pod, while the 725 is more cycling oriented and is packaged with some bike sensors. Both of them are fully compatible with ALL sensors, so I'm starting to wonder if they're the exact same thing.

Ellipticals with heart rate monitors

How accurate are the newer models of ellipticals that have heart rate monitors on them?

Also, when working out, there are 4 levels: Below, weight loss, cardio, and above. If I want to lose weight, I feel like my heart rate at the weight loss pace is too slow so I'm typically up into the cardio or above levels. Is it somewhat accurate that I should be in the weight loss range on these machines?

The heart rate monitors on the ellipticals that I use are not too far off what my Polar shows -- within 3 or 4 bpm.

As for the "weight loss", "cardio", and "above" -- forget that stuff. It's based on the old mythology of a "fat burning zone." I don't think I've had a cardio workout in the past 3 months that has been any less that the high end of "cardio" and the majority of them are way above "above".

How accurate is the heart rate monitor?

...on the elliptical at the gym? or the treadmill for that matter. Because according to the machines my heart rate was between 180-190 through my entire workout. I was breathing hard (some people were looking at me like 'shut up' in fact :boxing:) and I was surely sweaty and gross when I left. I know that they're probably not that accurate...and that the cals burned isn't very accurate...I guess I'm just hoping my heart rate was around there, because I think that's where I'm supposed to be for my age. Just curious!

I've found the HR monitors on the ellipticals and treadmills at my gym to be fairly accurate -- but the calorie monitors are at best averages that are anywhere from 20% too low to 20% too high.

This is the way you SHOULD look after cardio! I generally need to use about 15 paper towels to clean up all the sweat I've left on the machine after I'm done. If I see someone all "sweaty and gross" doing cardio, I admire them.

:rotflmao: Thanks! haha you know what, I AGREE!
