Sport Healthy Indulgences?

Sport Fitness
I'm the type of person that can become easily obsessed with being absolutely perfect about maintaining a specific routine... however, if I'm too strict with myself for too long, I ultimately "snap back" in the opposite direction. I know myself well enough to recognize that if I allow myself small indulgences in my diet every so often, I'm far less likely to fall off the tracks.

So, here's my question to all of you: are there any healthy "indulgences" that you allow yourselves in your diet? Some cookies baked with all-natural ingredients, or a small spoon of almond/peanut butter, etc?

I've always LOVED the experience of eating, and know that satisfying my palette with rich flavors is something that I can't give up. So, I'm trying to come up with a list foods that will give me the "illusion" of indulgence while being good for me...

Maybe some kind of energy bar..........

Indulgences

I think a small piece of dark chocolate, some nuts, or peanut butter.

I'm the same way as you. I can be strict on myself for a couple of weeks and then I binge UNLESS I allow myself certain things.

Exactly! A handful of nuts (raw, unsalted) is definitely an indulgence I like, as well as dark chocolate. I'm thinking of doing some baking (maybe date squares?)... does anyone here have a particular favorite dessert recipe that I should try?

I LOVE Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I have once small one after dinner each night. I also have chocolate milk each morning. Other indulgences usually include an all-natural cookie for dessert, a fat-free latte, or cottage cheese with honey drizzled on top :)

Unsalted nuts

Yep, I have to eat unsalted nuts or I just KEEP eating them. If they're unsalted I can put them down after just a few.

I don't really have any good recipes that I can think of right now. Have you ever tried "No Pudge" brownies? I thought they were pretty good. They're a little expensive for a brownie mix though. You can get them at almost any grocery store in the baking section but definitely at a health food store. The bad part for me though is that I live alone so I have a hard time not eating more than one serving at a time.

Oh, I also eat a small spoonful of natural peanut butter and honey for a small indulgence.

I agree with you Teresa. Peanut butter and honey is just divine, especially on toasted whole wheat bread. If you really want to indulge add a banana :)

I'll have to try honey on cottage cheese Lynn, that's sounds really good.

I allow myself one cheat meal per week. This meal is usually anyhting that I have been craving and is normally not "healthy".

Cheat Days

I also allow myself a cheat day. On that day I usually eat a donut and pizza

I have been bulimic in the past though and I don't EVER want to go there again. I TRY to keep everything in moderation.

I wouldn't worry about 4 miniature snickers pieces. Just don't do it every day!

I've had two HUGE cheat days in the past few months... New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day.

On New Years, I had cookies, alcohol, pizza, chips... it was a all-out binge. On Valentine's I had Lobster gnocchi with cream sauce, roasted duck, wine and three different kinds of custard at a 5-star restaurant. On both occasions, I had an amazing workout the next day, ate mostly lean protein and veggies, and had a recouperative 9 hour sleep.

No damage done. :)

Hi,

I really dont consider nuts and PB as a healthy indulgence, but a healthy addition to ones diet. Every morning I add a mixture of unsalted walnuts, peanuts, and almonds to my oatmeal, along with a tablespoon of honey. Ive seen no adverse effect on me either. I also think if the PB is a quality natural PB there is nothing wrong with that.

Someone mentioned a bannana as a added indulgence. I see this as a good thing to incorporate into your diet. I enjoy a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts and wholegrains, fish(wild salmon) etc. I dont see these things as indulgences as much as needed ingreidients in a healthy diet.

My personal indulgence is a glass of wine or a mixed drink or a amstel light. Everything in moderation I think is ok to a point.

I think.... ovaltine made some very funny comedy on the Seinfeld show. ;)

How bout making a small loaf of some kind of healthy bread like zucchinni bread or bannana bread, you could use whole grains and splenda in place of sugar etc. You would know what was going into it if you made it yourself. Or homemade whole grain pancakes or waffles?

I can't live without chocolate, so when I buy my whey protein, I get chocolate flavored. I get my chocolate fix and 55 grams of protein all at once :D
