Sport Healthy food to keep at work?

Sport Fitness
hiya all,

i'm at home for the holiday, and working a few weeks at my part time full time job (I work here full time but only during breaks in class -- summer, winter break, etc), and I need some healthy snacks to have between breakfast and lunch, and lunch and dinner.

we have a fridge I can keep things in, as well as a cupboard I can put some drygoods in

i was thinking maybe some peanuts or something, but I'm afraid i'll eat way too many of them lol

thanks!

sorry I suppose I should have mentioned that

I am trying to do the 5-6 meals a day thing, and I am currently trying to lose the last 30 pounds or so to get to my "healthy weight." I was 216.x last Thursday -- been slacking this week b/c of weekend vacation -- and hoping to get down to 180-190 over the coming months.

Oranges are great for between lunch and dinner, give you a little 'pick me up.'

Rice cakes are low calorie and fat snacks and they make them in flavors like apple cinnamon, carmel, etc

You can find pop corn such as 'smart balance' that is not loaded with butter or salt

Healthy cereals can be eaten dry as between meal snacks

Low fat cottage cheese is a good source of protein

Just a few off the top of my head

I would suggest you stay away from snacking on rice cakes, popcorn and most cereals. These provide little to no nutritional value, and often leave you just as hungry as you were before you ate them.

If you're going to do cottage cheese, you might as well get large curd full fat. It tastes a lot better, and keeps you feeling full for longer. I typically eat cottage cheese with orange slices, peanuts (preportioned, so you don't eat too many), beef jerky, homemade protein bars, precooked chicken w/ rice, etc...

skip protein bars, unless you made them yourself. all the store bought ones suck. too much sugar, sugar alcohol, saturated fat, and the quality of protein is low.

The small packages of crackers with pnt butter or cheese on them are fairly decent snacks. Their fat content is around 30% of calories from fat i believe. There are a few different kinds of crackers so read the labels and get the ones lowest in fat. A little fat is OK. Like Skian said, it will help you feel full longer. I also like the beef jerky route. Once again, read the label, some is more than half fat. I like the Jack Lind's steak nuggets. 70 calories and 1 gram fat per serving. But, usually I eat maybe 1/2 a serving just to get through to my next meal. Apples are good, they've got a little fiber which will also make you feel full for a little longer. Anything like baby carrots, broccoli florets, even throw in a little "light" or "fat free" ranch dressing. Maybe mix it up a little, an apple and some kind of cheese or a little peanut butter. I've eaten an apple then a couple of the little steak nuggets. I like the low fat wheat thins, they're OK too. I'd agree with the reduced fat popcorn and some of the low fat cereals. They could even be paired with a piece of fruit. Surround yourself with stuff you like. A little fat is OK as well as protein. Both will help you feel full longer than a fat free snack. Good luck and let us know what you end up eating. See ya, Greg

One bit of info, be careful of those small packages of crackers with peanut butter/cheese on them. Years ago when I never bothered with nutrition I used to eat around 1-3 big packages of crackers which contained 8 small packages in them. Each of those small packages had trans fat ranging from 1-4g.

I would be taking in 56g of trans fat just from those crackers alone on my "healthiest" week back then.

Make sure you pay attention to the nutrition facts of those peanut butter/cheese crackers. I will NEVER eat them again and it makes me sick that I never realized what I was doing to my body back then.

I am just letting you know to pay extra care when shopping around for snacks.

Bingo! Like IWGT and I said, read labels on EVERYTHING. 2 products that seem very similar may be extremely nutritionally different. Again, Good luck, Greg

I would keep it simple. Several kinds of fresh fruit (bananas, apples, pears, etc.). They are good for you, have no fat, no sugar and are low in calories.
