headaches after an intense run

hi Guys,
need advice - can't figure this out. i am getting really bad headaches after hard interval sessions (most of my training right now is runs 6 miles and up including interval session - usually i break down to 2 mile warm up real easy and then 4 miles with either 400 m speed up interval and 400 rest with or 800 m moderate speed a with 800 m rest?) or a progression run that is hard. i have a high rate to begin with so that is really not much of an indication if i am working too hard. i think it has to do with dehydration or maybe not getting enough of sodium. is there really such a thing? i don't use much salt and i prepare all of my meals.i do drink a lot of water threw the day and while i workout i sip small amounts. any suggestions?

This can sometimes be indicative of dehydration but you also mention a high HR - what are we talking about here? How high is it at resting? I know clients with hypertension can have problems with headaches.

Has this just been happening recently?

I would advise you to get to a professional and have a quick health check just to be on the safe side.

I agree with Coach Palfrey. Headaches could be nothing, but they could be serious. You would be well advised to have this checked out.

I'll echo the same...having a high resting heartrate is something you should talk to your doctor about. have your blood pressure checked, even if you just use one of the free machines at walgreens...do it a few times to get a good baseline reading.

thanks guys! i actually have had a physical not too long ago and everything is fine. i did have some issues with blood pressure but it is now normal and it has been for quite some time - 120/80. i have had those headaches for a long time already. it doesn't happen all the time only when i do a intense workout. i think it is dehydration and maybe i should drink sports drinks when doing intense workout instead of just plain water. maybe my recovery needs twiking? i did ask a doctor about this before and he said it wasn't a cost for alarm. my resting heart rate is around 56 - i have been running for about 4-5 yrs now and since i can remember i have had the headaches.

A balanced diet will generally take care of any electrolyte problems you may have - and without the cost of buying drinks all the time. Good news that you have no problems though.

It could be a postural problem - especially related to the position of your head when you run. I would say it is very unlikely that, as it's been happening for 4-5 yrs, that it is anything to do with dehydration. I'd probably suggest a postural assessment of sorts - a biomechanist or sports injury specialist will be able to help. Speak to your doc and try to get referred.

thanks guys! i had never thought of this being a postural problem.i do think there might be something to do that and i will make an appt to get checked!
yes i did have a stress test done along with ekg since i also have a murmur in my heart that turned out to be nothing threw all the tests. thank you for all of your suggestions!
