Headache with squats

Ok so recently I have started the 20-rep squat program, and on the other day of my workout, I got this massive migraine (or that is what it feels like) and it feels like my head is going to blow. I kept squatting, as I got this half way through the 20 rep set, and got them done. For the whole workout thereafter, this headache loomed over me, and although it was not as bad as during the squats, it was still bothering my workout. I thought that this was the end. This was on friday, and I figured it would just go away.

It is now sunday, and these really bad headaches have been coming and going since friday. I had it most of the day on sat, and it seemed to transfer to when I moved my neck to the sides. And now on sunday, it has agrevated me again.

Now I dont have a workout day until tuesday, and I am leary about continuing the 20 rep squat program, although I really want to.

Any suggestions on what might be causing these headaches?

Possible causes could be breathing (although Im sure im doing this properly), blood pressure?

Im lost, and need help up guys

how about hydration levels? i get headaches if i'm not hydrated.

could be blood pressure. have you taken anything for the headaches? i like excedrine (or an off brand clone)

initially I'd just say 'nervous system overload' but that shouldn't continue for two days.

ever have problems with sinus infections?? maybe you have a very mild sinus infection, not enough to feel stuffy, but enough to give sinus headaches??

i drink plenty of water, yes yesterday I took a couple of advils, and it seemed to work for the most part, and no to the sinus infections.

i wish for more feedback on what you guys think, and will be back from work at 5. For now, I gotta run
 
Perhaps it is blood pressure? Using such huge muscles to move that weight would probably cause a sizable gain of blood pressure, if I were to guess.

You may want to see your doctor on this one, quite honestly.
 
i consulted my boss, who is a knowledgeable pharmacist, and he said that it could be that i have a small tear in my muscle that could be causing the pain in my head. He said it could also just be a tension headache, and will go away as I have just strained my muscles, which I can believe during the 20-rep squat, as the weight is putting pressure on my shoulders and traps the whole time.

I will give it a day, or two. I dont have to workout till tuesday, and maybe i'll take a day off from squatting and just do some deads.

i'll brief you guys on what happens, and if it gets worse, i'll see a doctor.

btw advil takes almost all the pain away, so that adds to the belief that it could be an inflamation problem.

Also that the weight isnt too heavy for you? you shoudltn be straining so hard you feel pressure in your head to do a squat.

Finally that it isnt caffeine withdrawal problem, for example if you consume a lot of caffeine e.g. coffe (also tea, chocolate, cola), if you dont have it you will feel a headache becasue caffeine dilates blood vessels, esp in teh head. When you stop taking it, even for a couple of hours in bad cases, the blood vessels contract and make you feel like you have bad headaches.
 
Talk to your doctor, I had something similar last year and the doctor said she thought it was my muscles running down my neck and back pulling on my head

Sorry if that sounds daft, it seemed to make more sense when she explained it to me but that's chinese whispers for you.

no makes complete sense, I think that is my problem, as it seems heavily affected by my neck.

I will go see a doctor, but what did your doctor say?

I don't think she said anything else, it was the NHS after all, if you're not about to die then you don't get any help ;)

I think her recommendation was to put up with it and stop my moaning.

Stretching would probably help too; do you have access to a foam roller?
 
Could definitely be that you hurt or strained your neck or back during the lift, which can manifest itself in the form of a headache... I have a lower back deformity and the docs say it is the source of my headaches...

but as others have said it could be blood pressure related. Are you performing proper breathing techniques? Whatever you do, don't hold your breath during exercise as it causes a severe spike in blood pressure. Do you show any other risk factors for cardiovascular disease?

Either way, if the headaches continue unabated, you should probably hit up your doc...
 
Like everyone else said, what's your blood pressure?


had my blood pressure checked on thursday coincidentally, the day before this started. It was fine.

btw back to what malkore asked about taking something to help with them, I am taking advils, and a little bit after, all the pain from my neck is gone, and am only left with a small headache.

well to no avail i am still getting these headaches...usually around the 15th rep of my squat. I will take a break from squatting, and am going to make an appointment with my doc. I also noticed I now get these during sexual exertion. I hope I dont have these for the rest of my life.

have been googling the topic, and I found that these are very common, although the ways in which people get rid of them are seem diferent.
 
did you ever get to talk to a doctor? I have the exact same problem as you. I am not sure what to do. It just started maybe a week ago on a set of 10 squats and has continued since then including while i run and also during sexual exertion.
 
I had this same problem. I noticed that 5 minutes into a set of squats, I'd get a terrible headache. I noticed that my ears almost felt plugged and the headache was always in the back of my head. The pain was so bad..... I had to stop. I have found the only thing that helps with this problem is to take Mucinex. For some reason..... I think in my case..... it has to do with the barometric pressure. Make sure you drink a lot of water while taking Mucinex! Just try it and see if it doesn't work. I don't have allergies or anything.... but for some reason if my sinuses are out of whack...... it effects my lifting..... giving me terrible headaches.
