Sport Having some trouble with eating right and low blood sugar...

Sport Fitness
Im new to the forum, but have read some great things here. Heres my problem. Besides being a little over-weight I have extremely low blood sugar. My blood sugar drops constantly, ESPECIALLY when I work out. I actually quit working out years ago because of this problem. I dont eat horribly, but I dont eat healthy ALL the time and to be quite honest because of having Hypoglycemia Ive actually gained weight.

Not only should I start working out again (was thin and muscular in HS), but I HAVE to get my weight under control and my body slimmed down. I was diagnosed with a heart problem about a year 1/2 ago and also a rare blood disorder about three years ago.

I really do have to be healthier and in shape. What are some ways to keep my blood sugar UP during and after exercise (even just throughout the day)? I dont eat horrible, but I do find that when I eat healthier that my blood sugar doesnt seem to want to stay up very long.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Note: Im 27, 5'7 and weigh in @ 186 (Being at this weight has made me feel like sh!t mentally and physically. Its also caused me some problems.)

Hypoglycemics need to eat frequently, about every 2.5-3 hours. Every meal you consume should have some protein in it to lower the GI of the carbs you're eating so you don't get those insulin spikes.

If you wouldn't mind telling me what you're eating, I can help you stabilize your blood glucose levels out by telling you what you should be eating instead.

As for working out, that's a balancing act. What you eat will depend on whether you are doing aerobic or anaerobic workouts.

What type of workout are you planning on doing?

I try to eat a lot of protein and try my best to eat every 2-3 hours, but heres where I mess up. I usually get "stuck" somewhere and have my blood sugar drop and I have to eat whatever I can get QUICKLY. It usually tends to be something that isnt the healthiest for me. I LOVE salads and fruit, but when I eat these things, my blood sugar either drops quickly after or it doesnt seem to help at all. Chicken usually (chicken breasts) tends to not help me at all which I dont understand. Its funny and very frustrating because my dr. and people around me have tried to tell me the right things to eat for my low blood sugar, but it never really seems to help me much. I really dont understand it.

I purchased a treadmill and have weights so I will be trying to do both. I really enjoyed working out when I could, but now Im actually quite scared to. :(

I want to be and feel healthier.

Maybe what you need to do is get a glucometer (one of those glucose meters that diabetics have), get some lancets and strips, and start taking your BG before and after meals (wait about 30-45 minutes after your meal to take your BG). It's a pain in the butt, but you might be able to get a handle on what foods are causing your BG to crash.

It sounds like certain foods trigger your insulin response more than others, and from what I've read, that's normal in hypoglycemia. You might also want to get "Hypoglycemia for Dummies".

You're right about the chicken. It's just not the same as red meat for some weird reason. You'd think protein was protein, but it isn't. Some sources are much better than others.

I'm diabetic and I know how difficult it is to function with screwed up blood sugars. You just have to find out what works for your body.

I dont know too much about this I just wanted to comment on the eating every 2-3 hours. This is something everybody should be doing anyway. This is what I do. It just takes some planning. I carry a cooler around with me but there are plenty of foods that you dont need a cooler for. There are cans of tuna you can get that are already flavored you just need a carb to eat with them. I usually eat it with an apple but you could also use a whole wheat cracker. I carry protein bars with me. Most protein bars are not really healthy so I only use them in an emergency. I also carry homemade beef jerky again youll need a carb to go with it. You can carry myoplex, tuna sandwich, hard boiled eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt in a cooler. Just some ideas. I have read that if you eat frequently and consume protein with complex carbs that this will level out your blood sugar but like I said I really dont know anything about this topic. I just wanted to give you some ideas on food that you can carry around with you so you dont end up in the drive thru at mcdonalds.

I just wanted to add that I think it is great that you have decided to take control of your health. Just stay determined and motivated and youll get there. Keep on doing your research like you are doing and youll soon have the knowledge and power to achieve your goals just dont give up.

I really appreciate all of the great info thus far. Im so glad that someone understands that chicken just isnt the same as if I eat beef (which I really have cut back on). I still crave beef, but only eat it maybe once a month or so.

I LOVE to eat healthy and me not being a picky eater is really helpful when it comes to having to eat all the time. I hate having to resort to going through a drive-thru to get that "quick fix" (I sound like a drug abuser; lol...).

I will definitely check out the Hypoglucimia for Dummies. My dr. used to make me check my BS every day before and after meals, but after my Diabetes test came back negative he said I could quit. I will check into the BG meter and see what that does for me.

And thank you both for the words of encouragement. This is one reason I joined this forum. I think encouragement is one thing I really need to do this and accomplish it.
