Gym workouts for swimming

I'm planning on going to the gym a couple of times a week to improve my swimming times. I'm not entirely sure what to do though. I'm mostly a freestyler and a breaststroker so I'm thinking I'll have to work my thigh muscles and upper body. Any ideas of good exercises?
 
All my triathlon buddies are of the opinion that there is no substitute for swimming to improve swimming. That said, I think elite swimmers do incorporate weight training but I am not sure what they do. Here is a bibliography that should get you started:
