Growing muscles by "stretching"

Hey,

I'm doing dumbell chest fly's, and I want to know if would gain muscle by loweing the dumbells so that it's nearly touching the floor, and hold it there for a few minutes.

It really burns when I do this, as the weight is just a few centimentres off the floor. The next day I'll always feel sore around my chest. Which is a good sign, right?

Thanks

Assuming you're doing these on a flat bench like most folks. Personally, I'm not nearly flexible enough to get the dumbbells near the floor. You must be very flexible. To me it sounds like your going too far. You may be sore the next day because you're hurting yourself. But, keep it up and let us know how this works out for you. If it's effective, others would like to know.

I can actually hit the floor. I'm very flexible. What you're probably experiencing isn't so much the stretching of your muscles, but the leverage of your arms against an extended muscle. There is more mechanical force acting on the muscle, causing you to do more work. It's why a half squat is easier than a full one. If you aren't feeling tension in your tendons, you'll be ok. It will also keep you mobile and flexible overall.

Assuming you're doing that on a bench and not just lying on the floor, that's dangerous. Overstretching the shoulder makes injuries.

Yeah I am on a bench, but I don't feel the wrong sort of pain, but just the feeling that I get when I bench press, when the barbell is at its lowest.

I'd listen to your body. If you're still worried consult a doctor though. I've been going with my gut and haven't had a problem yet.
