the question of green tea comes up a lot on spark people - the dietician there answers the question with that in order to get any real effects from green tea, youhave to drink at least 4 cups per day to see any of the health benefits of it...

Increases metabolic rate
Clinical trials conducted by the University of Geneva in Switzerland indicate that green tea raises metabolic rates and speeds up fat oxidation. In addition to caffeine, green tea contains catechin polyphenols that raise thermogenesis (the rate at which calories are burned), and hence increases energy expenditure.
 
I drink green tea, and yes, I do often have a cuppa before a workout. Does it increase metabolism? Possibly not, but if the caffeine gives you a boost for the workout, then it doesnt do any harm.
