Sport Green vegetables Or not?...

Sport Fitness
Hey, I'm a 15 year old boy with a small problem. I have an Iron deficiency.

Because of my Iron deficiency I lose a lot of Hair, and I mean a LOT of hair. When I take a shower in the morning and dry my head with a towel a lot of my hair gets of and gets on the towel. Some times I even have hair hanging from my head midday which is nasty and annoying. I'm not slowly getting bald or anything because I have a full head of hair and I like keeping it long which allows my hair to fall out more.

Besides My hair loss problem I also feel extremely tired sometimes because of low Iron. I don't play sports but am planning on joining track and field so I need to get rid of this tiredness.

So I want to know what I should eat to increase my iron consumption. I already know about green vegetables and beef but I want know more foods with Iron because I don't like either beef or green vegetables.(excluding olives)

It takes a while of trying some of those green foods cooked different ways to really like them. Such as broccoli. There's a dozen ways to prepare it and to me that makes a HUGE difference. My preference is steamed in a steamer and eaten while still hot. Once it cools I can't stand it. I also like it raw dipped in garlic hummus. Spinach I dice up and cook in egg whites. You don't even taste it really especially with a little salsa on it! I found a small list online of iron rich foods. I know that iron supplements make my stomach upset.

Liver and other meats
Seafood
Dried fruits like apricots, prunes and raisins
Nuts
Beans, especially lima beans
Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli
Blackstrap molasses
Whole grains
Iron-fortified breads and cereals (check the label)

Honestly, you'll need to suck it up a bit and just eat healthier. I assume your doctor diagnosed you as iron deficient? Did they not recommend a daily iron supplement??

Also olive's aren't green vegetables. Olives grow on trees, and are considered a fruit. One not very high in iron.

Yeah my doctor did recommend an Iron supplement and I sometimes 4get to take it...

OoOoOh thanks for the olives info

Have you tried collard or kale greens? They are baisicly an open canvas for flavor, so try cooking them with something you do like. Ive found a touch of balsamic vinegar and a little hot sauce can work wonders on almost anything...

I put that S@#t on everything. Really though, that's a good way to get it pass the tongue, while you adjust to the flavour. Just take it easy, and don't over do it.

Take your supplements regularly. Lossing hair should give you the kick in the pants to keep at it. If not im not sure theres much anyone in here can say to help. And you should be eating your green veggies no matter what for your overall health.

Do not forget your iron supps! Iron defics. can take a very long time to rise to a normal level, so not taking them only adds to the length of time it will take for your body to stabilize. also how are you taking them (what combination of food - i have alotta hippy mates that take iron supps as they are full hardcore vegans - they wash their daily dose down with a glass of citrus juice, or a fresh orange / grapefruit, but personally i can not comment of whether this makes much of a diff.)
