Scales dont have to be expensive. Just get a cheap set. They wont be hugely off in accuracy and then if you break them who cares. The main things that I can think of that require xpensive scales are drug manufacturing and cullinary specialists.

Scales where I live can be bought for around £10. That's $20. Not that expensive.
