Going to the gym but nothing is changing!!!

Hi, I'm new, I joined because it was my news years resolution to look great for summer bikini time! I've been working out a lot, but nothing is changing!!

To give you a little background - i'm 5ft, 23, yr old female. I've weighed +/- 105 my entire life. I'm thin, i know, wear size 00, xs, etc, but I'm very meaty, you can pinch an inch everywhere! (i have small bone structure) So i look good in clothes but not as much in a bikini. I store fat mostly in my arms and back, and i have boobs, so sitting down I always look bigger than I am. Anyways, all i want are skinny arms!! and well to look tighter!

So I never really used to go to the gym, and I used to eat whatever I like, mostly in moderation and diet foods if available. But I used to eat a big bag of sour patch kids at least 3 times a week!! (about 750 calories per bag)

Since January I started going to the gym, i never really worked out much before, at first I was going 2-3 times per week, but for the past month I've been going 5-6 times a week, doing about an hour of cardio and about 20 minutes crunches, weights (mostly arms). (After doing some research, i concluded i have to lose weight to get skinnier arms, because weights exercises would only tone but not make them skinnier. Hence all the cardio work.) BUT NOTHING IS CHANGING!!!

AND I stopped eating sour patch kids cold turkey for the past month, and I've been watching what I eat more and trying to cut out other sugars. I know I must be eating less calories than I'm burning!

Now I'm just frustrated cuz I feel like all the this effort is not getting me anywhere!! The only thing that changed is my boobs got smaller almost a whole cup size!!!, before i was a 32D and now i'm at 32C!!!! on the scale...it always fluctuates, but I come in at 103 more often than 105.

I dunno what to do!! Any suggestions!! (and i don't want to get a personal trainer, not until I find a summer job in this messed up economy. I'm in law school, any takers?)

you, obviously, are seeing changes in your body, but they just aren't where you want to see them. everyone's body is different and different in the fact of where you may lose weight first. with you, it's your boobs. but that's at least a sign that you're going in the right direction. but you can't really determine if you're going to lose more from your boobs, or then lose from your waist or legs first, then arms last or vice versa.

to lose fat though, you need a strict diet and cardio. i like weight training too because i prefer toned arms. my arms do thin out as i lose weight, but they also looked toned, not bulky. but it's whatever you prefer.

i'm thinking you're on the right track though...

I would prioritize weight training if I were you.

Big time.

And ditch all the cardio.

And optimize the diet.

Full body strength training 2-3 times per week

2-3 sessions of moderate intensity cardio per week

1200 calories or so which is comprised of:

100 grams of protein

40 grams of fat

110 grams of carbs

On the protein front, shoot for whole foods like chicken and turkey breast, lean ground beef and steaks, pork tenderloin, low/no fat dairy and eggs (yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, etc), fish, protein powder, beans, etc.

On the fat front things like fish oil pills, fish, nuts, natural peanut butter, olive oil, avacados, etc.

On the carb front tons of veggies and also fruits, rice, yams, potatos, whole wheat breads, oats, etc.

You need to add muscle.

I'm worried weight training will make me look bigger... especially in the arms. My arms are soo big and when I flex they look so muscular!! and that was before I started working out! I hate the muscular arms look on a girl, i just want super skinny arms!!!
When i do weight train i try to use the lightest weights, usually 3 pound dumbbells with lots of repetition... but i feel like losing weight is the only thing that would work for my arms, thats why i'm all about the cardio... i usually work on an ellipticle that has the arms things too.

about the diet... i don't really understand why it matters so much what I eat as long as the calories are less than the amount I burn...
I've been eating eggs (with bread), yogurt, cottage cheese, for protein.. but other than that i'm too lazy and not too good at cooking meats, chicken or fish. i eat a lot of wheat thins and cheese. and greek salads a lot too.
I'm trying to stay away from sugars, i started substituting equal for sugar in my coffee... Eating right is really hard for me because i'm too lazy to cook so i just snack a lot. But i just want to be able to eat whatever I want and make up for it at the gym. I've been missing sour patch kids a lot!!

what you are eating is going through your body..
Your body needs some kind of vitamin, carb, protein, etc... to work fine.
Even some glucose (sugar?) is needed to get more energy.....
I am on a 1200 kcal diet too... I thought it was okay.... But I got tired very fast lately and I found I was missing some stuff in my body.... "IJzer" (Fe) I don't know if the english word is iron....

Well good luck...!

What?

Super skinny arms? Why would you want that? That doesn't sound healthy, nor does it sound attractive. You told us that often you are "too lazy" to even cook a worthwhile meal, so something tells me you may not be keeping up at the gym. It also seems that as soon as you get the results you wanted you'd fall back into eating bags of cabbage patch kids and stop the gym completely.

Health and laziness don't go hand-in-hand, you really need to have the right mindset to tone your body the way you want, and fitness would be a lifetime commitment. It matters what you eat because the body needs certain nutrition, and if it doesn't get that it could lead to a skinny, frail, weak body (Especially for women) if you are eating a normal amount of calories or less. Losing the small amount of fat you have is probably tough because you are not overweight.

I normally have 1 snack between meals every day, and its normally a yogurt or one of those 90 calorie Chewy bars. Snacking isn't a bad thing, just as long as you don't overeat when you do it.

If you get into the mindset of being healthy instead of being skinny (it seems you are skinny already anyway) you would probably end up getting the tighter, toner body you want. Best of luck to ya.

this is completely off topic but I watched your youtube videos they were awsome

Rosesred - you're only 100 pounds - max 105 pounds. No one at that weight can have fat or chunky arms. No one. Impossible. You may be perceiving lack of tone for fat. Or you may have a warped body image. I would follow Steve's advice - because from what I've read here he knows his stuff and does things in a sane way. Your reply to him wasn't very polite given he is trying to help you.

Ditch the artificial sweetener - go back to natural sugar. If you want to go with a real natural sweetener, consider honey. But artificial sweeteners have caused issues for too many people including mimicking symptoms of MS, and also may be implicated in problems with weight loss (pending further research). Not worth it - sugar in modest quantities is safer for your overall health.
