Going for the long run... building stamina

I used to be able to go for the long distances while running. After a serious battle with pneumonia, my lungs seem shot. I've been trying for a year now to get back up to being able to run more that 2-3 miles in a run (used to be able to run 10 like it was nothing). What's the best way to get on track to more miles?

Are you cleared by your doctor to run? If so, and assuming you don't have any medical limitations, I would start with a run/walk program. Run at an easy pace as long as you can until you are breathing hard, stop running and walk until you get your breathing under control. Repeat as many times as possible for 30 minutes. Do this and you will up to your physical limits in a few months.

I've been cleared by my doc, she said that the pneumonia weakened my lungs considerably (obviously if I could run flat out for almost 10 miles and now struggle to run 3 at a jog almost). Tonight at the gym I started the run/walk you suggested, it's going to be awhile, but I think doing it this way, I'll get there!
