Setting goals are a must if you plan on achieving any type of success. Without goals, you have no clear idea of what to achieve. Goals will give you a motivating plan to strive for. You'll have fewer excuses and you'll be able to see your progress through out your journey. However, before you start setting goals, the first thing you need to do is find out what is "really" motivating you to make these changes. Is it general/health wellness? Is it feeling better about yourself? Are you preparing for a marathon? What ever it may be, that is your specific goal.
Once you've figured out your "real" motivation, then its time to set a long term goal. Where do you want to end up? For example - how much weight do you want to lose, what size pant do you want to ultimately fit in, or think of any other definitive objective you want to accomplish.
Next, break down your long term goal into short term goals. For example, if you want to lose a total of 50 pounds, focus on losing 1-2 lbs per week. This is a realistic, safe and doable goal. If you consistently achieve this goal every week, the pounds will add up and before you know it, you'll be in double digits. At that point, maybe then you want to set your next goal to reach 15 lbs, then 20 lbs and so on. As the more weight comes off, the more motivating it gets!
After your goals are set, the next thing is a plan of action. Are you going to accomplish this by adjusting your calorie intake or overhauling your diet? Is exercise going to be a part of it? Can you do this on your own or do you have someone to keep you accountable? Create a plan that you can follow and commit to. Write things down and keep track of everything! Food journals have been proven to increase success.
Follow through and stay committed no matter what. There's never going to be the "perfect time" to start your weight loss journey. You're always going to have birthdays, holidays, outings, get togethers, parties, office pot lucks, etc. Is that donut really worth it?? Sacrifice now and let it pay off later.
Gauge your progress and make any necessary adjustments.
Good luck and feel free to ask any questions. I'd love to share some success stories.
