Giving blood and training..

I had to consider where the post this for a short while, but figured maybe this section would be best.

Anyways,

Would anyone like to share information on how giving blood can effect training, both weight lifting and cardio work?

Last time I gave blood, I nearly passed out a few hours later. I'd give it at least 24-48 hours till I tried any activities.

Unless you are working out before donating blood I would skip it for the day. You are down 1 pint or 1/10 of your blood volume. If you are drinking a lot of fluids afterwards the volume will be replaced very quickly. it won't be blood though as it will take 8 weeks for your body to fully restore the blood lost.

As long as you drink a lot of fluids post donation (think like 1 liter) you will be fine the next day.

8 weeks to restore 1 pint of blood? Well the plasma will get restored quickly, so I assume you're talking about the blood cells lost. Where did you get this number?

Cant eating a lot of foods with high iron content (eg red meat) in the long run give your blood a higher iron content? And in the long term increase the risk of heart disease n sh1t...

So giving blood once in a while will reduce the iron content in the blood.

Where the f**k did i hear this now???? Or did i dream it :D

I'm pretty sure the body can rid itself of iron if it needs to, unless you've got some kind of condition.

Like I said the VOLUME will be replaced rather quickly (within a day or 2 as long as you drink plenty of fluids) but it takes approximately 8 weeks for your body to fully restore its red blood cell count to what it was (hence the "the date you may donate again is xx/xx/xxxx or 56 days from your previous donation)

I got it from all the times I've donated blood and had the 8 week wait explained to me.

that sounds like a very long time. You should see some major setbacks with training, specially cardio training, if it takes 8 weeks to restore the blood cells..

I'm donating again at the beginning of march...ill let you know how it affects my fitness levels in regards to training for the marathon.

Thanks FF,

Just thinking about it I want to give as much as I can with my life, it's something set in my personality and giving blood is one way.

Answer

It is not true that it takes 8 weeks to replenish 1 pint of blood. In fact, red blood cell production has dramatically increased within 2 days of donating blood. The blood cell production tapers off the closer you get to full blood cell count, so initially your red blood cell count is nearly 63% restored in the first week after donating, and about 95% after 5 weeks. Every person is different, however. The time it takes you to return to full blood volume (99% of maximum) is on average about 6 weeks. This is dependent on erythropoietin (EPO) in blood circulation. Increased EPO is caused by reduced red blood cell count, insufficient hemoglobin per red blood cell, or reduced availability of oxygen in the body tissues. The next several weeks required before donating again are to ensure that you are not donating before fully replenishing your blood supply.
