Answer
It is not true that it takes 8 weeks to replenish 1 pint of blood. In fact, red blood cell production has dramatically increased within 2 days of donating blood. The blood cell production tapers off the closer you get to full blood cell count, so initially your red blood cell count is nearly 63% restored in the first week after donating, and about 95% after 5 weeks. Every person is different, however. The time it takes you to return to full blood volume (99% of maximum) is on average about 6 weeks. This is dependent on erythropoietin (EPO) in blood circulation. Increased EPO is caused by reduced red blood cell count, insufficient hemoglobin per red blood cell, or reduced availability of oxygen in the body tissues. The next several weeks required before donating again are to ensure that you are not donating before fully replenishing your blood supply.
