Getting over a Plateau

Hello everyone,

Well I have been on my weight loss journey for a while but I am in need of some help. I will start off just by explaining a little about myself. I started off at 260 lbs and am currently 200.5 lbs but have not been able to get past this weight for a long time. I am a male 5'10 and 27 years old. I have been at this weight for about 4 months now. Currently I am having 5 meals a day taking in 1500-1800 calories a day with lunch being my largest meal.

I would like to hear from any professional here or someone that has experienced something similar to what I have and has been able to break their plateau.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello there Shawners, welcome to the forum.

I'm not a professional nor do I have much experience with plateaus, but I'll try to help.

Are you exercising? For some reason, I never seemed to lose any weight (even on a 1000 calorie deficit), until I added some exercise. I never figured out why, all I know is that I stayed on a deficit for a long time, and never saw any progress.

If you aren't, I suggest you start doing some sort of physical activity. Try to do something you enjoy, and start slowly. If you push yourself too hard, you can injure yourself, or have troubles maintaining a consistent routine.

Besides that, the only thing I can recommend is making sure you aren't underestimating your calories (I suggest you buy a food scale, and weigh your food) and use other measures besides weight. You can use a measuring tape, or body fat % (some scales come with this function).

I'm uncertain about giving eating advice, as I recently changed towards a pseudo-carnivore path. Both sides (I.e: People who eat 100% or almost 100% from the animal kingdom, and, pretty much, everyone else) want to tell you the other side is bad and will make you sick - There is a lot of confusion going on, and one eventually doesn't know what to believe anymore.

Anyways, I'm sorry for the rambling. Good luck! :)

Hello AthalaRanger,

Thanks for the tips I do appreciate it. Normally I run 30 minutes to 1 hour everyday on an elliptical. I have recently changed the way I run by running 1 minute 15 seconds fast then 30 seconds jogging intervals. I have heard that this helps. But today I weighed in at 199.5, so I was super happy to be out of the 200's.

I do not have much experience with plateaus since this is my first. How fast can you lose weight after you have passed it?

Congratulations on moving past the 200's.

Im' not a professional but just sharing my experiences. I usually switch the intensity, routine and the time I do my aerobic exercises. This usually get things slowly moving again.

If this doesn't work, make sure you're not miscalculating your caloric intake. This happened once and I was slightly on a surplus enough to just maintain my weight while exercising.

I'm not a professional, but, if your calorie counting is accurate, then after 4 months it sounds like you've hit some kind of steady state. How much daily exercise do you get?

The way I deal with things is daily running (5-6 miles) plus cycling or walking/hiking if time permits. Also, I got pretty quick results when I abruptly gave up meat (except for some fish), casein (dairy) & gluten-- cold turkey! It was easy to make the change, but, a challenge to maintain this to become habit. Now, after 3 months, it's a habit. I feel fantastic, more energetic, weight dropping.... I have a new routine now.

Oh, I'm 5'9" and back in 1991 (mid-20's), I weighed in around 240lbs. with sedentary lifestyle. In 1993, I started walking/jogging daily and went vegetarian for a while... by 1995, weighed in at 186lbs. Since then, my weight has drifted between 185-195lbs. Now approaching late 40's, I've been on an ambitious daily running schedule and 3 months ago abruptly changed my diet as mentioned above. Currently weigh around 168lbs. I feel great and feel in control of what I eat. I feel stoked.

Hey Westcoaster,

I am getting daily exercise. Normally 20-40 minutes of running plus lifting weights. It seems to me I may have passed it. Today at 197.5 so we will see if I continue.
