getting abs

I have been trying to get good abs since 8th grade. I am now in 12th, and it still isnt working. I run with my X-country team every day which averages to be about 4 miles a day. I know i need to eat healthier but its almost too boring... I guess what im trying to ask is what kind of diet do i need to go on in order to get great abs, what kinds of exercises should i be doing and also what are the most effective ab workouts that will work every part of my abdominals. Anyone?

If you're doing crunches and leg-lifts (reverse-crunches, they're called?) and isolating the muscle right, the only problem I would see hindering you is both your diet and your genetics. Since you can't change your genetics, you ought to change your diet, if you really want to get those abs. As for me, I don't really care one way or the other...*eats Reese's Puffs*

thriller? wtf u talkign about? lol

you're on the right track for a "six pack" if you're running that much each day, but i think you need to change your diet and add some exercises. i run to 2 to 3 miles each morning, and also do 50 crunches and 40 pushups before the run - or 50 leg lifts and 40 reverse pushups. i also restrict my diet to about 1800 cals a day. it sounds to me like you should add the aforementioned exercises and also change your eating habits and you should have no problem reaching your goal. i'm 42 and was able to do it, you should be able to get good results too, at your age. just stick with it.

thanks for all your help everyone! Now i no what to do and have more motivation to do it. k now i think i know how to post pics so im going to give it a shot!

god that took forever haha. i couldnt figure out how to resize them but finally i got it. phew... well thats what im working with. Its not bad but Its also not what i want. I want them to be more toned and noticeable. So thanks for all your help and if you have any more advice or whatever just tell me!

you're pretty close now to what you want, drop your calories back and add running (each morning if you can) and daily leglifts and crunches. you can alternate doing legflits & crunches every other day, just do one of them every day. you should see the toned look you desire after not very long.

thanks so much shimmering, you have great advice. I have a strength class i can do my leglifts in and then i can try and do crunches every day. I think i have it all figured out... the hardest part of it all will be eating healthier and cutting back on the calories. wish me luck guys!!! Im going to start getting really serious about all this next monday... this week can be a practice week ;)

well what i do to save calories is cut back on the meals. i do a blended whey protein shake (8 oz water, scoop whey protein powder, half a banana,a few strawberries or half a peach,1 tbsp milled flax seed, 1tsp reduced fat peanut butter, sprinkle of cinnamon) for breakfast every day after my run/workout, along with a tall glass of water. then for lunch a bowl of cereal with either lite soymilk or FF milk along with a tall glass of water. you can combine various cereals to keep it interesting, i often mix 3 or 4 different varieties. then a sensible dinner - sometimes a stir-fry with shrimp and veggies & rice, sometimes spaghetti or other pasta - but always with a salad made from spinach leaves, maybe some iceberg lettuce, and some carrots and or tomatoes. & i use "light done right" dressings (any flavor) on the salads. for sweet cravings i have a piece of fruit or a diet soda - usually those are so sweet they kill the urges. you can vary up this diet a bit but you get the general idea. if you do that and the DAILY leglifts and/or crunches - maybe some pushups too if you can, and running at least every 2 days, you'll get the abs you're looking for. just remember, food doesnt have to rule you, just think about the results you're getting and the trimmer abdomen and smaller waist size you'll achieve. that's exactly what i do and it's worked well. my goal has always been to look good (and be healthy of course) if i'm wearing a swim suit. oh and one last thing, i dont believe in supplements in general (and definitely not "fat burners), but i do take a fish oil capsule and calcium capsule with breakfast and dinner. hope this rambling speech helps & good luck! :)

Well starting next monday i will be doin all of that and now im really excited... hearing all of the stuff to do and seeing results will be amazing! Thanks a lot! oh and the swimsuit thing... i think thats every girls goal lol

just stay motivated and once you fall into a routine it'll get easier and easier. everytime i take a walk in public and see how badly most people let themselves go it makes me more determined to stay in shape. :)

i think your super hot. you need to cut back on the sweets, i bet you eat ice cream for dinner and then chocolate for dessert. cut back on all those calories, and keep up the hard work and you'll be even sexier than ever.

My best advice is to keep up with the XC team, then also do some core workouts. i.e. Full situps 1 min, crunches 1 min, legs extended in the air + sit ups 1 min. That should burn some fat in that area.
