Sport General Rule of Thumb

When would you suggest the best time to eat before you workout. My coach suggests 3 hours. Today I was so busy at work and I didnt get to eat lunch. Ate breakfast at 9am and that was it, so I get to practice and I am drained and almost passed out.

Anyways what would be a good meal of sorts to eat before a high intensity cardio workout that lasts an hour?
 
60-90mins pre-workout is the norm for eating.
 
pre workout meal should be just like a meal /?? I should emphasize on carbs for pre workout meal right ??

i usually eat natural peanut butter on 100% whole wheat or multi grain bread ...

should I change it ??
