Sport Gaining Weight

Hi GUys~ My boyfriend wants to start gaining weight. He is currently 5'5 and weights about 110lbs. He doesn't have an ounce of fat on him, he is just solid muscle, but hes not ripped or anything. He wants to start gaining wight, but hes not too much into working out right now. Can you tell me what he should eat, or rougly what he needs to do to start gaining? Any advice would really help. Well to gain weight he can either put on fat, or muscle. Gaining fat obviously isnt a healthy goal. This is done rather simply by eating more calories than he burns off in a day. Just tell him to focus on eating more, but keep it as healthy as possible. If possible, convince him that a simple weight routine will go a long way in making the weight look more appealing. You dont want him to get that "soft" look and lose all his definition.
 
Okay thanks so much... How do you feel about protein shakes, are those good to have in the morning with a regular breakfast? Or those weight gain powders at GNC? I know he basically needs to eat a clean diet, lean meats, fruits, veggies, H2O etc.. I will talk to him about a lifting routine, see if he's interested. Thanks Again!
