gaining weight while exercising~

At the beginning of the year I started working out for a few months and lost 58 pounds in about 5 months! But I stopped working out for a few months~ (not my choice) now that I'm back to the gym (for a/b a month now) I've bn working really hard and have gained 3 pounds!?!?! I'm doing everything I was doing b4~ same workout routine~(only dif is.. I am working out a little more) what's wrong with me~? why am I gaining!? TT____TT

if gaining muscle will make me gain weight then when do I actually start loosing again? It's been a month already~ ~___~ and I do mostly cardio exercises (like the tred) and aerobics.

you also might want to check what you are eating... is it the same as before? are you eating the right kinds of foods for losing fat and gaining muscle?

I agree with 1_day_at_a_time... a great way to check to see if you are making any difference in your physiology is to measure yourself - use a tapemeasure (or string) and measure your hips, arm, tummy, thigh, chest... then two weeks later measure again... if you haven't seen a reduction in weight - you definately might see a change in your size!

good luck honey - and keep at it!!! sometimes the scale is not our best friend, but we just have to keep working through it =)

the scale is a poor way to tell if you are making any progress, especially if you are weight training. As Amo said, do measurements on your body. Also, since you are weight training more than before and you have already lost a lot of weight. You will see an increase in muscle before you see a decrease in fat, as the weight training is almost new to your body, so you will have to wait till you hit a plateau of some sort

I'm getting a bit frustrated though~ When I stopped exercisng I continued to loose weight no matter what I ate! I used to eat w/e I wanted and never really stopped loosing it~ Yet when I start going back to the gym and started dieting again I stopped loosing! It could be muscle, but a few months ago b4 I stopped workingout for awhile I never really gained weight while exercising. Pounds just kept dropping off of me~ they aren't dropping anymore~~ :( And I haven't lost a single inch... What's wrong with my body~~? it hates me TT______TT

I find that when i work out my body holds in water. That could be what's happening with you. Usually if I take a couple days off, then my weight will drop about 1-2 pounds. Just keep working out, because you're not doing anything wrong, working out is good for you. Just make sure you're not increasing your eating.

hmmm... do you know how many calories you are eating each day? I have heard that if you don't consume ENOUGH calories (and since you are exercising even more, you are burning even more) that your body will go into a sort of starvation mode and actually store more fat... I only started thinking about this since you said that when you exercised before you were eating whatever you wanted...

It would be good to figure out how many calories you need each day, and I can help if you help me out with this info:

weight, height, age, typical activity level (slightly active, moderately active, etc.), and how long/how many times you exercise.

Perhaps you had gained muscles, but were losing more fat weight. When you stopped you lost the muscle weight (hence the continued weight loss). now you are gaining back that muscle. maybe?

one of two things has to be happening- either you are eating more than you are working off, or yu are gaining muscle.

Keep it up

I can tell you this. It's taken me a year to lose 13 pounds. I work out for an hour 5 days a week and keep my calories under 1800 per day. I think that it's much healthier to lose at a slow rate. You keep it off longer. I'm at the point now where I don't really get upset when I don't lose weight, but when I do it's soooo awesome. I can really tell a difference in my appearance and have lost a lot of inches. Just keep at it. Make exercising part of your ordinary routine, like taking a shower in the morning or something. Also, eat small meals all day. I'm constantly eating light snack throughout the day to keep that metabolism going. I've gone from 182 to 169 and it feels great!
