gaining weight, increase in muscles?

ok, i go to gym 5 days a week along with other family members. they are all complaining of gaining 3-5 pounds. i have pretty much stayed the same. i know that if you lose weight and gain muscle it may show on the scale, but what i am wondering how long does it take before you start showing a drop on the scale even if you are gaining muscle? and how do you know it's muscle your gaining and not weight?

Trusty old tape measure and mirrors. I don't use scale to measure my dieting, I'm still the same weight I am when I started, but I now fit in to clothes that I haven't in over a year, and I've lost 4 inches from my waist and 3 from my hips.

but when will it start showing on scale? it's bound to sooner or later if you are really losing weight. i do measurements. i have only lost 1 1/2 inches since jan 11.

Ignore scales, Its the your size you want to reduce, and with muscle being heavier than fat, your size will shrink despite the scales. Scales are very inaccurate way of reading fat. 1-1/5 inches is quite a lot for that time frame just hang in there and don't stress out about how long its taking, it'll only make it harder for you to lose the weight at all. I've been dieting for months now and haven't lost any weight, but I'm slimmer and thats what the real goal is.

dieting for months and no weight loss? well good for you for hanging in there. i would not like it if i went all that time and dint lose weight. i am just a numbers kinda person. i want to get on that scale and see a smaller number. i just cant help it.

I'm slimmer than I was, more toned than I was, fit my old clothes again. I'm happy with that. Scales mean nothing, its my looks and health that I wanted to improve, and I've done that, not far to go now.

yes i know all that is important, but what about from a health standpoint? i could say im happy being 150 cause im toned and fit in my clothes etc. but the fact is, im STILL overweight according the the doctors office.

Sometimes your weight doesn't reflect how healthy you are. You think bodybuilders are unhealthy? Some of them are considered overweight.

I've managed to stay on and off at 50-51 for a month.... well not much effort though, just not watching my diet and do regular exercise but what we want is to see some drop in the scale so i started watching my diet and it dropped to 49kg I guess it would take a month or so of plateur before it comes down again. so hang on!

this site says if 2 weeks go by and your not losing weight then you have to change something your doing.

Wonderwoman,

Two weeks seems particularly, um, optimistic. What has been your personal experience (I realize the info you posted wa on a website)?

I've always heard that you have to stick with it for 6 weeks to start seeing results, there after you should see steady results. That's pretty much been my experience.

just remeber that variety is key because after a couple of weeks your body will adjust to what you are doing and then it wont pose such as a challenge. You should start seeing results as long as your eating heathy too because diet is a major part in weight loss. Another thing is that you could be just gaining muscles and not losing any fat (i.e. eat heathy)
