Gaining weight but not making sense

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I'll give it a shot.

I have always suffered with weight problems, even when younger eating normally and more active than others around me I was overweight. I'm now 40 years old and started dieting last year, I'm 6ft 2" and a very big guy (52" chest), I was 350lb last July and at the end of last month I had got down to 250lb using mostly the cambridge diet. About 3 months ago I started going to the gym and I now also cycle 6 miles every morning finishing off with a high intensity workout that theoretically I'm told is supposed to continue to burn calories for the next few hours.

I have gradually been reducing the diet and supplementing food instead so now I have a breakfast bar in the morning a diet shake for lunch and an evening meal, like grilled chicken or a stir fry veg & rice but over the last 4 weeks I have put on 15lb and cannot for the life of me understand why.

I do feel more healthy but am still carrying a belly I cannot seem to lose and this is starting to make me feel angry and upset!

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this weight gain and how I can get rid of the belly fat?

Have you been taking body measurements, with the intense exercise you are doing your body composition and shape may be changing in a good way, The scales are not everything.

Not really taking measurements but have been doing weight training at the gym which I would guess will add a little, my chest when I was younger always used to be around 49" so I have added 2-3 inches to that. It's just the flabby belly and the sides that I can't seem to shift but I have only just really started with the daily routine really.

So you would say the gain is nothing to be worried about or that I should go and get checked?

I would suggest taking weekly body measurements for a while, with the strength training you can gain muscle and loose fat. muscle is more dense than fat so will take up less space but weigh more.

Exercise is only a part of the puzzle, diet is the most important factor, it would be a good idea to start recording exactly what you are eating so you can get a better idea of your calorie intake. It is entirely possible to over eat healthy food.

Also remember the first place you gain fat is the last place it will come off. so if you gain around the belly easily then this will be the last place you loose fat from, you cannot spot reduce.
