I am a 28 year old male who recently started excercising again, after a pathetically long hiatus. I am currently about 50 pounds overweight. I began doing some anaerobic upper body workouts 3 months ago, and am currently dieting. 3 weeks ago I quit smoking, and 1 1/2 weeks ago I began to attempt some aerobic workouts.
So far I've tried raquetball, walking(/jogging), and ice skating. In each instance, I've gotten the exact same problem:
Almost immediately, the front of my ankles begin to hurt intensely. I can feel the muscles tightening up, and the lack of circulation. This sensation always begins in the front of my ankles, and then slowly spreads up through my legs to the shins, calves, and then (once) throughout all of my upper legs.
When I am done, there are large (noticeable to both sight and touch) bumps to the left and right of my shins. The bumbs are soft, and not sensitive to the touch.
I should also mention that I am extremely flat footed, and have a tendency to walk with my toes pointed outwards somewhat due to this.
My question out of all of this is two-fold: first off, is there anything I can do to ease the pain/symptons? Secondly, if there isn't... is it dangerous to continue? I've seen some other threads where the reccomendation was to stop running for a week... but since I've only BEEN doing this for a week, I wonder how productive this would be?
Thanks a lot,
Robert
