From Milk Maid to Marthoner

Hi all. I'm new to this site, though I've been lurking for a few days. I thought I'd go formal and introduce myself.

Right after Thanksgiving '05 I decided it was time to stop using the kids as an excuse to carry 25 extra pounds. They were all done nursing (more or less) and it was time to focus on me. Through diet I lost 15 lbs, then hit a plateau. I finally decided I would have to start the dreaded, much avoided, scary routine of exercise. I bought a treadmill and much to my surprise, not only used it regularly, but loved running (an activity much avoided since being introduced to it in PE class in 6th grade:) ) My brother and his finace are both avid runners and have convinced me to attempt a marathon in December.

My current goals are to lose another 6 lbs to reach my goal weight of 120. Lose more body fat, and of course, run that marathon!

I would like to know what is the most accurate way to measure body fat percentage at home? Is it worth while to invest in one of the bathroom scales that measure weight, body fat, water and bone density? Is the hand held device I got for $10 reliable (I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but feed back helps)? Calipers? Measurements? I'm at a loss. I know the best way is to do the water dunk, but I have no idea where to get something like that done or how much that would cost. The cheaper the better, but I want accurate too.

Looking forward to mingling with you all on the boards!

I ordered one of these from Heartratemonitorsusa.com. I'll let you know how well it works when it gets here. At $7 it can't be much but then I can't afford much. Like you I set a weight goal in the beginning. Now I am setting a body goal and not worrying about weight. I realize that as I build muscle I will not lose weight and may even gain some. To see my progress thus far see my training diary The Greenetuckian Files

Good work and great progress so far, just keep it up.
