forearm splints??

hey,
recently ive been getting a pretty sharp pain in my right forearm (little bit of my left, but more on the right). It doesnt really hurt when i put tension/resistance on the muscle, but it hurts like a Biatch right when i start to release the contraction.

For example, Ill curl a heavy curl bar for about 8reps ... then when i go to put it on the ground .. right when i start to let go i get the sharp pain in my forearm. its like half way from my wrist and elbow, on the outter edge.

it feels exactly like a shin splint, but on my forearm and more painful.
anybody else got/had this ... how did you get rid of it? whats the best way?

thanks :)

My friend has something of this sort, you might be developing tendonitus or maybe even arthritus, best bet is to have it checked out, how old are you?

i'm 19.
i dont believe its what you suggested it could be.
Like i said, it feels exactly like shin splints, exept forearms.
dont think my tendons would play a role... but im no expert on it.
hope somebody else knows wat im talkn bout.

Hell yeah I know!!!!!!!!!
This pain is horrible, it just leaves me with my hand opened and I cant move it for a couple of seconds, it's truly a terrible sharpening pain in the exact spot you have it! And I have more pain in my left arm than on the right one. I truly dont know what it is either, and Im 19 too.
I thought it was lifting too much weight but I then I thought that I lift the weight with no problems, the pain comes when releasing the barbell.
It happens only when doing a byceps exercise, and it doesnt hurt when lifting the weights, only when I release and I dont know what the hell to do. Im afraid it might be something bone-related but it beats me.

Forearm "splints"

I have been having the same problem recently. The pain is just as you describe it; it is especially painful when releasing weight. I do a moderate amount of lifting, usually not with much weight. My problem seems to stem from climbing and judo. Both activities involve a lot of forearm use and movements that resemble hammer curls. I was in a lot of pain a few months ago, but eventually it went away after I took some time off. Then last week it came back with a vengence and is more painful than ever. Someone suggested that it might be the forearms not being strong enough to support the weight that your biceps can handle. I'm not sure about this. Anyway, I'm going to the doctor or physical therapist to get this resolved. If they tell me anything useful, I'll post here. Good luck.

Hey, that's a coinsidence. I thought I was the only one who had it. I post a topic about it more than half a year ago, see for yourself:

http://training.fitness.com/showthread.php?t=1342

Do all of you also have very slim forearms ? Ectomorphs n stuff ? At least I think there must be a link... But like I said in another topic already:
...
If it is, I can tell you that with me it suddenly stopped... I tried many different routines since then - very low reps to very high reps. But since a few months, I haven't had the pain anymore. Perhaps it is because I train less than I used to, so the bones got time to become stronger or something.
So I think that using less weight and training less often might solve it...
But would be nice to hear what the doctor says about it, thanks in advance for letting us know =)

Edit - Until then I'd advise you to take it easy... the way you guys describe it seems like it hurts even more than with me, so it might get worse if you keep doing it - up till the point where something bad might happen :s

you may be tilting your wrist during bicep curls. when you bring your arm up, you may be bending your wrist to get that dumbbell just a bit closer to your body. this causes strain on your forearm.
try to concentrate on keep your wrists very straight and steady. may have to reduce weight to do this.

i had the same thing a few weeks ago and i asked my doctor...

its because your forearm is weak...and it cant handle as much weight as other muscles can ..so next time u go to put the weight down do it very slow and steady..after a while your forearm will get stronger from doing other exerices..then u wont have that pain..try doing some forarrm exercises once in a while..and make sure u stretch before your workout..

hmm

thats weird because i know my forearm muscle isnt weak. First off, i work my forearms out here and there ... and second, i have always had a lil bit stronger/more muscular forearms than average.. even before weight training.
I have a feeling it might be bone related, because i can feel a sudden ridge at a certain point in my forearm that isnt the same on the other side.

Possibly it could be a hairline fracture or something alike, i will for sure see a doctor tho.

Your forearms may be weaker than you think. I have a strong grip and bend 8 penny nails into U's for fun, but I had a similar problem recently. I'd been doing handstands and walking on the hands which puts a lot of strain on the wrists and forearms, and began to develop that forearm pain. Feels like the bone but it probabaly isn't (unless you've been continuing despite the pain for some time).

Like shin splints, it's probably due to a combination of weakness and inflexibility. One exercise I can recommend is to stand with the arm extended straight out to a wall, fingers pointing up and hand flat on the wall. Take a step or 2 back and keeping your hand straight and without cheating use your fingers to press yourself back. You can put your hands lower on the wall to give a greater stretch, depending on your wrists' ROM. And of course step back more to make it harder. When I do this the pain goes away.

If you can do hand pushups on the ground like this (both hands of course) then you will have good forearms, and I would be surprised if you suffered from this problem.

Otherwise, just take it easy, like you would take off from running with bad shin splints. And stretch your wrists after a workout.

I had this problem also. But it only happened when I would use a barbell so I switched to only dumbbells and never had it again. In my case, I don't think it was weakness of forearms because I have pretty big forearms compared to my upper arm, but I could be wrong. It did happen in an odd place though, it was on the side where there wasn't any major muscle, so I also thought I should start doing light wrist rotations. It seems to have helped but I just stick with the dumbbells, ya gotta listen to your body.

Im 22, and I have this pain in my forearm as well. Like you guys, it doesn't really hurt until I release the weight. For me, when working on my biceps with the bar, it hurts less when I slowly twist my wrist away from me and release my grip from the bar. I've noticed that its began to hurt at work too when I moved some dry wall sheets. But in that case, I was pushing the sheets up onto a cart with arm that is giving me trouble. I hope this will heal itself because I can't afford a docotrs visit right now.

I get similar things, but that's because I have carpel-tunnel/tendonitis -- which is a very common condition for bodybuilders.

My #1 tip is to lift with wrist gloves. They prevent you from bending your wrist joints as you lift (meaning that the force is produced by your muscle and not by your joint). It's a good idea, especially if you lift long-term. The longer you lift, the higher your chance of developing one of these conditions.

If it is on the outer forearem halfway between your wrist and elbow and is felt when doing the eccentric movement of a bicep curl is could be your brachioradialis attachment. Google brachioradialis etc. The reason you'd feel it when using a barbell and not dumbells is because the brachioradialis functions to rotate your forearm (radius over ulna). This movement of the brachioradialis is prevented by the fixed barbell but isn't during the dumbells.

Forearm splints

IM a gymmast and i have had severe forearm splints for the last year or so mainly on my favorite event the pommel hoarse. I have been using wrist supports to tighten my arms but right after my turn, both my forearms shoot insane pain into my forearms and it hurts like helll. And unlke wieghtlifting i cant give it a break becuz if i dnt work out on that event i will lose shape fast on it, so i need some advice on what to do!!!

I'm female and used to be in gymnastics. Forearm splints is a problem many male gymnasts have who work primarily on the pommel horse (for obvious reasons).

Your pain is caused by an irritation of the interosseous membrane and surrounding soft tissue. Basically you want to strengthen the muscle that runs along the bone of your forearm on the pinky side.

Try this:

Fill up a bucket with rice (we used a large paint bucket) and then stick your forearm down inside it. Rotate your balled fist in a circle for about 25 reps. Then do it the other way.

The whole point to this exercise is to keep your forearm and elbow rigid and to not let them move. This isolates the target forearm muscles.

You could also try weights -- do some forearm strengthening exercises.

Try this out, lay off the pommel horse for a week and see if this alleviates your symptoms.

just because you're 19 doesn't mean you couldn't have tendonitis. Being young doesn't protect you from injury or bad genetics.

don't discount this 'uncapable' of being an injury or physical ailment. could be the joint, the muscle, the ligaments, a nerve....

if the suggestions posted here don't help it go away, or if it gets worse, see a doctor.

Thank you everyone, I have never had this before and I've been searching for days to find information on this forearm splints pain and finally found some great leads here here. I wanted to add what I found for other folks too...
They won't allow me to put in the real URLs so please remove the "{dot}" strings if you want to try these.

Searching for "Brachioradialis" lead me to these pages, and both seem to have very promising advice.

you all were a big help,
much appreciated!
