Football players at every level come in all shapes and sizes. The common trait of all good players is that they perform at a high level on the field. Just becoming bigger does not mean that you will be a better player. In fact, you may not play as well if an increase in weight means that you lose speed and quickness.
A beginning player should start with a lifting program that uses their own body weight before moving to lifting actual weights. This would include push-ups, pull-ups, dips, two and one leg squats without added weight.
Younger players, who can master the lifts using their own body weight and begin using weight training to gain strength and size should work on technique and repetitions and not become involved in trying to lift maximum weight. It is important that this training be well supervised and conducted in a safe manner.
If you are a freshman or a sophomore you will naturally continue to gain weight in the next two or three years. We can help this weight gain by working on a well supervised weight program in the off season. I would not make this a high priority during the season.
Junior players can also use next off season to really focus on a weight program that develops the big muscle groups in the body and senior players are probably at their optimum weight for their development, but can make gains prior to enrolling in college.
Weight lifting should be directed to getting stronger with an increase in size being an added advantage. The actual lifts that you do should be directed by your coach and should increase the strength in the muscles which you need to play the game.
If you really need to gain weight or if you are having trouble maintaining your weight during the season, you might want to supplement your normal caloric intake of three daily meals with three snacks of fruit, a nutritional bar, a sandwich or protein drink.
The drink or nutritional bar should not contain creatine or other potentially harmful substances. Increasing the number of calories you take into your body each day is the one way to increase your weight.
During this season, it is important that you spend time on your classroom work and not spend all of your time right now on football. Focus on the things that you can control right now and we will work on the other areas once the season is over. Have a great year.
Look up sparq training on yahoo or google. That will really help you.
Glad there is someone on the same page as I am. I'm going out for linebacker in my JV season.
