I'm trying to lose weight and I found this article while surfing the web. I wanted to know what people think about it. Should I try eating these foods to help me lose weight?

Foods That Are Appetite Suppresants

  • #15 Salmon This delicious fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids. When they're in you're stomach, your body produces more of the hormone leptin. Leptin is a helpful hormone that suppresses your appetite as long as its circulating in your system.
  • #14 Bran
Bran is full of fiber which expands in your stomach to keep you full for hours. Sprinkle bran flakes on your favorite dishes or simply put two tablespoons in a glass of skim milk for a filling drink.
  • #13 Raw Veggies
Chop them up and put them in a salad. This fiber-rich meal will keep you full for hours. And because its low on calories, you can super size it.
  • #12 Whey Protein
It doesn't look appetizing but that's OK. Add a spoonful to a smoothie for long-lasting appetite suppression. You'll make it well into the afternoon before you start checking the clock for your next meal time.
  • #11 Flax Seeds
The great thing about flax seeds is that they expand in your stomach. Add a few tablespoons to a salad for a filling snack. Or add flax seed powder to your smoothie or desert. It will keep you full for hours without adding additional calories to your diet.
  • #10 Kale
These green, leafy beauties are full of fiber. Have them lightly sauteed with a little olive oil and salt for a healthy snack. They don't have enough calories to dent your diet and they'll keep you too full to cheat later.
  • #9 Oatmeal
Oatmeal gets a bad rap for being high in carbs. But oatmeal's high-fiber carbs digest slowly and keep you full for hours. Plus, oatmeal suppresses ghlerin, a notorious hunger hormone.
  • #8 Wasabi
This hot Asian condiment is no main dish. But add it to vegetable or fish dishes and you've got a natural appetite suppressant. Wasabi is also a natural anti-inflammatory that takes care of belly bloat.
  • #7 Tofu
Tofu is a great source of plant protein. Tofu is also high in genistein. It's an isoflavone which provides long-term appetite suppression. Those with diets high in tofu eat less on average than those who go without it.
  • #6 Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes have a diet-friendly secret. Each of these tubers contains a special starch that resists digestion. And since sweet potatoes stick stubbornly in your stomach, you stay full longer.
  • #5 Eggs
There's no better breakfast for appetite suppression. Eating eggs in the morning will give you a full feeling that lasts for over 24 hours. That means less snacking during the day and fewer calories on your daily total.
  • #4 Apples
An apple a day will keep your next meal away. These beauties are chock full of soluble fiber and pectin which keep you fuller longer. They also regulate your blood sugar levels to prevent spikes or drops which can lead to hunger pangs.
  • #3 Avocado
You'll struggle to find a better source of good fat in nature's kingdom. The combination of fiber and full fat in these green guys suppress your appetite while they're keeping you healthy. So don't be afraid to indulge.
  • #2 Almonds
Almonds are full of good fat and vitamins. But they're also great at creating a feeling of fullness that lasts. Pop a few as a snack when there's a few hours before your next meal.
  • #1 Psyllium Fiber
Few foods are as effective as psyllium at keeping your appetite down. The insoluble fiber keeps your digestive tract from sending hunger pangs your way. Add a few teaspoons to a morning smoothie and you'll lower your caloric intake for the day.

Tell me what you think, will this help me? Thanks.

It certainly looks like a list of healthy food - but be warned that it isnt all low calorie...

I would experiment with encompassing the foods into your food plan (while monitoring the calorie and nutritional profile of the foods) and see how they work for you.

Almonds for instance would not be brilliant for me - because they are pretty high in calories (as are most nuts) and I don't know whether it is me - but I do not find them as filling as all that... I can eat 1000 calories in nuts and not feel like I have eaten anything and still be looking forward to my next meal...

Avacado is not very low in calories either...

Having said that - I swear by salmon being a brilliant food... Some of my old friends here and I used to joke that having salmon for a meal was a secret weapon if we wanted a good weighing the next day...

Most of these make no sense to me.
Salmon isn't filling for me at all - I could eat myself silly on salmon. Two, three large pieces, and I could go on. And it's very high in calories to start with.
Almonds? Same thing. I used to eat almonds from the bag - 2 lbs bags sometimes, and the only reason I would stop eating them would be the fact that they give me stomach cramps.
And apples? There is no better way to make myself hungry than eating apples. Sugary, sweet apples with loads of calories.....so again, not good to stay full or not feel hungry at all.
Vegetables in general, raw or cooked, give me no sense of being full at all. A meal that consists entirely of vegetables would be pure torture for me, since there would be nothing to really fill me up.
Oatmeal - one of those things everybody says to eat for breakfast. Since it's so high in calories, the portion I would allow myself would have no chance of even remotely filling me up. Same goes for most other stuff on the list.

So none of that stuff wouldn't have an effect, some of it would probably make me put weight on rather than getting it off.

Omega - just wondering, why would salmon be good before a weigh in day? It's fatty and salty, wouldn't it cause you to retain water, and end up making your weight higher instead of lower? Or is there something that I'm missing?

well, oatmeal works for me so far, I have 10 grams of oatmeal every morning and it really fills me up.

I wish it would do it for me, since I'm very limited on breakfast stuff. I tried something called 'oat so simple', where you just add a bit of milk and stick it in the microwave. One bag would be the maximum, calorie wise, but I ended up having three, and still being starving hungry an hour later. Same with fruit. If I eat two sandwiches on the other hand, I am fine until late afternoon. Go figure.

What I do is 10 grams of oatmeal + 100 ml of milk in a mug 2 minutes in the microwave and it makes some tasty porridge and I'm usually full, but it doesn't work for everyone I guess, I always was a no eater in the morning...

Not the smoked salmon - I'd gain weight like nothing else if I ate that...

Plain salmon - either squirted with fry light or a slight rub with olive spread and then wrapped in foil and baked in the oven... Served with veg (often sweetcorn and peas)...

I have no idea of the science behind it - but know that when I did my big project I kept a major spreadsheet going for about 2 years... I had everything in there - my weight, stepcount, what other exercise, main meal which was the main food I varied from day to day since I tended to be repetitive regarding other meals, TOM data, even things like toilet habits and whether I had eaten any of key food items (eg cheese, bread, chocolate etc)...
The stupid thing was that I consistently had my best weighings for the week on the morning after a salmon main meal... I was so focused back then... It got really silly and made it sometimes feel like it was the only thing making a difference...

The other meals were of a similar calorie level so it wasnt that the salmon was the only sensible thing I ate...

The other days were pretty well balanced...

Whenever I was in a team challenge with people like Kimberly (Bikinibound) - (who said that she got good results with salmon too) we used to joke on and say that we had better have salmon the night before weekly weighing... Dawn (Bellaryna) used to say it worked for her too... I know that they both did it on individual challenge weekly weighings too...

Its hard to get away from that kind of experience... If I was a person that we have both been recently chatting to on the forum (using more than one account) I would probably swear blind that it obviously speeds up metabolism or some such rubbish because my experience proved it... I'd probably be convinced that it would work for a billion other people too...

I have no idea who else it would work for - LOL I just know that I sometimes think that I ought to be having salmon more often - but I currently do not fancy it...

LOL - I'm so like you on the nuts - except I don't get the stomach cramps... Once I start - the only reason I stop eating is because I have eaten them all...

Oh, give me cashew nuts or hazelnuts or really, any kind of nuts, and the only reason I'd stop eating them would be if there were none left. It's just almonds that I react to - about 20 to 25 are okay, anything beyond that is a guarantee for a night of stomach cramps. :/

None of these foods seem to work with me... I could eat lots.

Except maybe for eggs, hard-boiled and plain (I.e: No salt). It works because they taste so bad that after the second or third I don't want to eat anymore...
:biggrinjester:

Thinking about it, the same goes for raw, plain vegetables... :willy_nilly:
