I was looking around for different recipes and found a few using a steamer. But I was wondering if any of you use a food steamer and find it a practical purchase that also helps providing healthy food options?

I find steamed food to be very very bland...

i had a steamer and got rid of it pretty quickly - took up space... and was an unneeded appliance.

Yu can get a bamboo steamer pretty cheapy that fits on top of most standard kitchen pots... that works ok for some things...

I add Simply Delicious Herbs for Grilling and Roasting or Mrs. Dash for giving the steam veggies a bit of kick. Makes it better than just plain stuff. no calories or sodium either.

I use the ziplock zip and steam bags. I love them. I put veggies in the bag and add my seasons...pop it in the microwave and voila...yummy..

I do this too. :)

Or I get the Steam Fresh brand vegetables and you just pop that bag into the microwave, then I add some seasoning or a bit of cheese for some flavor.

You don't have to buy a steamer to steam food. To be honest, it's a waste of space and money to buy a contraption that is used for steaming and steaming only.

As a chef, I would recommend getting a steam basket. You just put them inside of a pot (that you already own) which has a 1/2" or so of water in it, put the lid on and let your food steam inside. You can find them for about $7-10 and they last for a really, really long time.

Just in case you have never seen one, is what they look like.

They are found at most stores that sell kitchenware. Bed Bath & Beyond is a good place to start.
