Sport Fitday a farce?

Sport Fitness
Ok so they've changed fitday around a bit.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something or if this is right.

My BMR is 2181 which is consistent with other calcs I've done.
I plugged in my lunch hour 35 minute walk today and 60 mins of weight lifting.
Now they are saying my MT line is 4020 cals. That just seems way high.

I understand that BMR is what I would burn in a coma. But I'm thinking I'm missing something when it comes to calculating my MT line for the day. I want to eat at a 500 cal deficit but eating 3500 cals for today just seems insane.

Let me know if I screwed up or if this really is an error on fitdays part.

thanks

FitDay's caloric expenditure in activity numbers have always been horribly wrong. It's supposed to be common knowledge. :p

Either use the standard multiplier or break your day down hour by hour (not as much work as you'd think, if you're consistent). I can provide you with linkage for this.

yeah I had an idea it was a joke. But the MT line thing is what really has me confused.

A link would be worth a rep.:canadaf:

John Berardi - Massive Eating Part I

Wouldn't bother with part 2, it's just his usual 7 habits type stuff for dummies. Obviously, you are not bulking, but let's just pretend you're smart enough to know which step in the formula to change. ;)

But for the record, I did it because I love you, and not because I'm a rep whore.

yeah don't trust those numbers. In fact, don't trust any numbers, trust the scale. If you're losing weight, your in a deflict, if you're gaining, you're in a surplus. Simple as that :) If you want, you could try to count your cals for a week where you don't gain or lose weight and then you would know your maintenance value for the level of exercise you did that week. But don't sweat it. I've never been a fan of calculating numbers about this. I've seen too many say "well I'm eating 3000 cals and some random online calculator said that's a 500 deflict, but I'm gaining weight" :p

Yep yep. Assuming we all know that these numbers are simply a tool for estimation, and don't hold a candle to precise tracking (which imo, is really easy with practice and the right tools). I do it pretty much automatically now, and spend way less time preparing food than I used to, despite eating much, much better and measuring + logging everything.

If you work an active job (construction, landscaping, mailman, etc) add 500 cals to your BMR. When you work out, like an hour of lifting or cardio, add another 500cal to your BMR.
That will give you a good idea of maintenance. So if you want to eat a deficit and say you lift or run every day, then just eat your BMR and you'll be at a 500 deficit.
(of course these are just very very rough estimates, but its a good general rule)

ha too bad I sit on my ass most of the work day. But I do work out for an hour or so 5-6 days a week. I do like your take on this. Thanks

I find that Fitdays 'activity' modifier for finding your caloric needs is really what's off. Prior to that modifier, they appear to follow Benedict/Harris formula for BMR.

but all their modifiers are too high by at least .1

i.e. if you choose 'desk job/seated' it actually gives you enough calories to be walking around for 8 hours, on your feel...more like a retail sales job than a desk jocky.
