Weight-Loss

hi all

I take fish oil, cod liver oil, for variety of reasons

but, I have noticed weight gain since taking it, and my recent effort to lose weight had no results,

there is a theory that fish oil increases serotonin, and there seems to be conflicting reports about serotonin role in appetite,

some recent studies now show serotonin increases bone mass and appetite,
and is inversely connected with leptin, our fat stat hormone,

above link is bunch of people having weight issues with fish oil ,

has anyone else found fish oil effect their weight ?

(I really dont want to stop taking it, it really helps with my bi-polar and anxiety)

thanks

I'm sorry I don't have any experience with this, I don't eat fish.
You could try taking vegetarian Omega 3 & 6 and DHA supplements, made from algae oil and see if it makes a difference. There's a few brands that make some, I get mine at the health food store. I hope that helped a bit.

How much fish oil are you taking? its a good idea to take it, I strongly believe it makes a difference to how supple I am, how well my back is and how my skin, nails and eyes are. I also believe it helps with brain function, I definetly notice a difference in my pain levels and injury rate of healing when I do and don't take them, it takes 2 weeks to have any effect though either way and quality stuff is required, cheapo stuff has poor quality Omega 3 and doesn't help with very much at all.

However! You do need to remember that to take enough Omega 3 Oils to have the required effect, it can mean you need to take a few calories worth- it does count as calories I'm afriad. I know its annoying but it does need to be included in your calorie total, just how many calories I don't know.

I have never gained weight in my life. Since taking fish oil (highest quality I could find) and then especially also borage oil caspulsed I have gained about 30 pounds! Since I had never ever before gained weight - my first thought upon trying to put on pants that would no longer fit was: Jeez! MY bones must have grown!!! (that's what was happening the last time I outgrew pants 30 years ago as a child!!!!) Then my weight was measured and I remain in deep, semi-depressed shock!

The only thing I've changed in my life over the past 2 years is the fish and then the borage (THAT really put me over the top -- fat face and everything!) Ugh. Like you, I enjoy the benefits of these oils, but yeesh, I want to be svelte and fit and look good again!

Finally, people gaining weight from taking fish oil supplements.

Here is why. Fish oil tablets contain FAT. Oils = FAT. Did you take into account the fat content and meet your body's requirements? Or did you go over?

I know a lot of people who take like 5-10 tablets a day.

So are you saying because fish oil is good it doesn't count as fat? Hence it won't make people gain body fat?

I'm currently taking Carlson's cod liver oil capsules. Each capsule is listed as 9 calories and I only take 2-3 per day. If someone was taking up to 10 per day, that would be 90 calories each day that would potentially be unaccounted for, which is pretty significant over time. (An extra 630 calories per week!) Even half of that, 5 capsules per day, would be a lot of extra calories each week.

@ WhiteLotus - how much fish oil do you take per day and how many calories would that be? Are you including these numbers in your daily fat intake or at least in your daily caloric intake?

Hello Dave.

First to answer your question. Does Fish Oil increase the levels of serotonin in the body? Yes, it does. But that makes it a good thing and not a bad thing.

Serotonin is the hormone that controls your moods and your sleep patterns. So, the use of Fish oil will actually make you feel better and sleep better. Fish oil will not increase fat in your body, unless you are making a meal of it. 2-3 capsules per day are recommended

Fish oil contains Omega 3, which is the best fat that your body needs. Remember one thing. Omega 3 is a vital fat that your body is incapable of producing. As such, you have to get it from your diet. Regular fish consumers generally do not need supplementation. But I still take it because I am not certain about the lead content and levels in fish.

So, what does Omega 3 from fish oil do? It keeps your cells more fluid. When cells are fluid the communication of the brain with the rest of the nervous system is improved (that is why more serotonin is generated). And it improves your cardiovascular system, your nervous system and your immune health.

Omega 3 from fish oil is also known to prevent various cancers, prevent Alzheimer’s and help in bone density.

Please do not stop taking Fish oil capsules. I am glad you are taking them.

Fish oil is an ideal nutrition for our health.

It is more beneficial for physical wellness and fitness, you can use it for losing your extra body fat and keeping your heart wellness. It manages the cholestrerol levels level and and stops from heart illnesses. It also very effective for eliminating the muscle tissue and pain.

The journey to gain weight can be as agonizing as the journey to lose weight. Something that both journeys have in common is that you need to provide your body with proper nutrition in order to gain or lose weight and stay healthy. As you may already know, for one to lose weight they must burn more calories than they consume. So, in order for you to gain weight you will need to consume more calories than you burn. You want to make sure that those calories are from nutritious foods rather than high fat and high (bad) carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are important because they give you energy. There are two types of carbohydrates. The complex and the simple. You want to stay away from the simple carbs you find in processed foods and enjoy the complex carbs that you find in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choosing the wrong foods to gain weight will cause you to clog your arteries and make you a candidate for heart attack or stroke. I hope this helps.

NO, not really
Fish oil complements do have calories- normally 10-25 calories for one capsule-
so eating one fish oil capsule is less that a rice cake, or a quarter of an apple or 3 almonds. It's such a small quantity of calories it makes no difference.
But, if you are really worried and count your calories , then just add the calories of the supplements into your calorie count.
