Sport First time for vitamins, is it even worth it?

Sport Fitness
there's really no story behind this I just been changing my life around and trying to do the right things for my body.

I don't really know where to start with the whole "vitamin thing" but I guess 3 things I was considering was

1. A multivitamin
2. omega 3/fish oil
3. b-12 supplement

I dunno if i was right in putting these into 3 separate categories but from what i gather these are what people take the most of.

I'm a college student so I don't have a ton of money. Any of you can tell me where I should start? what brands I should buy etc?

If you need any more information to assess the situation let me know and I will post back asap. Thank you!

well, vitamin supplements aren't going to help if you get enough vitamins from your diet. Do you eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and other nutritionous food in general? IF you don't, then a multivitamin might be a good idea.

i got to be honest. i don't eat healthy.

i don't mean that i eat fast food or anything but i live at home with 2 women and eating is very erratic.

i definitely don't get enough vitamins and minerals though cause i hardly eat fruit or vegetables.

i quit smoking 2 weeks ago so that's why i haven't really started cracking down and working on nutrition. last night i stayed up for a while looking at the things on this forum and recipes people on this forum use. i got a lot of ideas.

i still think it would be a good idea for me to take the vitamins tho as i hate getting sick and would love to have more energy throughout the day.

taking a multivitamin would be a good idea since you're not really eating well. Just know that it's better to get vitamins from actual food than just pills, that's because in healthy foods you have a lot more than just vitamins and minerals, there are other substances aswell that could be benificial as well.

well what do you think about these for the multivitamin?

Life Force Multiple (Iron-Free)

Also do you think I should take omega 3/fishoil and b12(for immune)?

i know my uncle and cousin both take those 2 and they are in good shape.

I don't know if it matters all that much. I don't know anything about brands outside of Norway.

B12 should be in the multivit. You could buy one of those that has vitamins, minerals and fish oil all in one pack.

Multivitamins typically do contain B12. B12 supplementation is typically needed only for those eating a vegan or near-vegan diet, since it is found in all animal foods (including milk and eggs as well as all kinds of meat). Some people have B12 deficiency due to lacking the intrinsic factor to absorb it in the gut, but such people are likely to need B12 by injection.

Regarding fish oil, do you eat fatty fish like salmon or sardines?

Remember also that many foods (particularly breakfast cereals) are fortified with vitamins and minerals, so if you each such things, you may already be getting the equivalent of a multivitamin. Of course, if your diet overall is healthy and well balanced, you are less likely to be deficient in any vitamins or minerals.

nah i dont really eat cerial for breakfast but if i do it's like (rice krispies, cheerios, honey o's)

I'm 22, 220 lbs, 5'9"

I quit smoking 2 weeks ago and eat the way an anverage person eats. not so good, not so bad if you know what i mean.

I go to the gym 5-6 days a week and try to lift + cardio.

My goal is to obviously look good for summer. I work out legs and stomach a lot (core strength is important to me)

I dunno if this is enough for someone to tell me what kind of stuff I should be taking but if you're concerned that I might already be getting the vitamins I need then don't worry, cause I'm not! haha.

Do I even need fish oil or flax seed oil? would it benifit me added with the multi vitamin?

Quitting smoking is good.

But the average person in the US eats very unhealthily -- sugar, refined carbohydrates, hydrogenated oils, meat that is mostly fat (heavily saturated, not enough good fats including omega-3) with little protein, hardly any vegetables other than fried potatoes, etc..

You may want to try to clean up your diet.

yes on the Life Force vitamins. those are pretty much the best for their price range (way way better than Centrum, etc)

Yes most Multi's will have B12, and to rehash what has been said, a good diet will work wonders. Multivitamins can help make up were your lacking in nutrition, but without a good diet too, your wasting your time. I would recommend taking a vitamin asap and start fine tuning your diet asap also, cheers!
