First 10k

In about 5 weeks I will be running my first 10k race. It's not really a competitive run, its a charity run, for cancer research. But, even so I would like to be able to run the entire thing, and not be dead by the end of it!

At the moment, I can run 5k pretty easily, not really exerting or exhausting myself. But, I'm not really sure how to train for the 10k...I don't know wether to gradually build distance, or to do intervals...

I'm also not really sure what kind of time I should be aiming for...

Any ideas on times, training and/or anything else that could be useful would be ridiculously appreciated, as I am on the verge of panic at the thought of dissapointing both myself and my sponsors...

Thanks in advance

Intervals are good. Try some hill training. You will be so excited at the start that you will breeze through the race before you know it. Find a good pace in your training and just go farther each time you run. Eat right get lots of rest and don't freak out. You are probably not going to win so just relax and have fun.

I aimed for 45 mins the first time. The course has a lot do do with your time.
My best advice is to find the girl with the best looking butt and follow her the whole race. Training is harder than racing. Their were 15,000 people in my race and it took 10 mins just to get to the start line once the gun went off. Look good when you cross the finish. Try saving a little for a finishing kick.

WorldB gave a pretty good answer.

i will add this.

take a water bottle out 3.25 miles from your house, come home, and then go get it.

a 10K is not a biggie. just do the distance and see what you do, then come back and report, and we can help you.

tell overall time, how much walking if any.

also a negative split is best mentality... meaning, plan on running home faster than you ran out, then you will control your pace.
