Finishing what was started

hello all

First let me say a couple of things. I am not in the typical demographic, I am a teenage boy. I hope that I am welcomed all the same. I realized I needed to do somthing like a diary to provide extra motivation. I hope for your support, as I will be supporting you guys too.

So heres my story.

Flashback to November 2005. People thought of myself as a typical high school boy, all the other guys like me, all the girls that I know think I'm nice, people must have thought everything was cool. In reality i guess I was begining to realize everything was not cool. I did not ask anyone to a dance that October because I was under the impression that "who would want to go with me." My confidence level about my self image was probably near zero. I was at 240 pounds, which even at 6-1 is alot. And this fat not muscle, I wasnt a stud athlete. Things were begining to change in my mind though. Constant borages of weight loss success stories in the media had me thinking, could I do it? Things came to a climax of sorts that november when I was essentially labeled a video game nerd in english class. That day I went home and put my ps2 in my closet and i have not seen it at my house since. Later that week at lunch a football player was talking about needing competition to get bigger for next year. I challenged him, only I would be getting smaller. All of my friends and a bunch of people heard about this contest and began placing bets. My weight loss journey was about to begin.

I started hot, as most people do. The first pounds are always the easiest to lose. I had plenty of motivation and a new found confidence. By Christmas I was at 225, much to the excitement of my relatives coming to visit. By February I was at 215 and through out that month I fluctuated between 209 and 215. Baseball started up and I began to cool off. I did not want to workout extra on my own because of practice, even though practice was easy. By the end of the school year I was back at 225.

So this is where I am today.

Since class got out I have gotten myself back to 220. I have I would say about 40% confidence in my body. Next year for me begins August 30, exactly 2 months from now. My mission is to get myself below the 200 mark for the first time in lord knows how long. I will be working out very hard and watching what I eat very closely. And that is where you guys come in. I plan on giving daily reports. I would greatly appreciate your support on this journey. Thank you very much.

Hi!

Good luck with your efforts! You are not the only young guy on this forum. I think you will feel welcomed and supported by all! :)

everyone is welcome here... :)

you've come to the right place for support and encouragement...

Welcome -- and good luck on your journey... and have some fun this summer.. you're your age only once... dont be so focused on dieting and working out that you don't have some fun too :)

Youth certainly has its advantages.

For many of us, we are the proverbial 'teaching an old dog new tricks' and let's face it, old dogs don't run as fast or as far as they use to and we definitely don't learn like we once did too.

In your case the food system as a whole is probably as wicked as ever in making choices that compliment the body and if you're not 'schooled' in the art of good foods, how would one know any better ??

Arm yourself with knowledge and pick up the skill of better food choices and live it on a daily basis. I'm afraid the 'bet' wasn't condusive for understanding how to eat consistently for maintaining your weight, you played it out for the dare it was.

Man, you have such an advantage to have good legs under you and some vim and vigor - or they're at least a boatload more obtainable to you than say a man my age :(

As far as the cruelity of being the 'tubby kid' in school, I think we've seen this go both ways. I know people who hated it so bad that they took off the weight and are still jailhouse thin 25 years later and the others have let themselves go to the point where obesity consumed their lives and are no longer with us. I doubt there is a person on this forum that doesn't understand how malicious the 'thin' crowd can be at that age.

I like the "I'll show them" attitude as the fire inside because you can fall in love with your own inspiration and live out to the point where it becomes such an everyday part of your routine that you automatically eat right and exercise without even thinking twice about it ;)

Step up and do your thing youngin', we're here for ya.

Hello, Ateen. T2 is so right on. It is great that you are looking to change your lifestyle while you are still young. You can do it! We will all help you.

daily recap 1

yesterday was a birthday in the family, and today was the day we formally celebrated by going out to dinner. I controlled myself by having a chicken caeser salad (my fav salad by far), but I had a piece of birthday cake. I'm not really concerned though because I didnt eat much today, not because I sat down and said A-teen you will not eat, but I was busy.

Being a teen I wake up late, so I rarely eat breakfast in the summer, its usually lunch when I wake up. But right after I woke up and registered on this site I worked out at the gym one of me baseball coaches works for (by the way I am a catcher and a pitcher, becoming more of a pitcher now). So I worked out being on treadmills, running hills, using medicene balls etc. As soon as I got done a buddy called asking to play tennis, sure why not more chance to burn calories. So i stopped at his house, downed a gatoraide, and played tennis for a bit. I got home and tied myself over before dinner by having some sliced chicken wrapped in cheese, this low cal coconut bar, and some teddy grahams with cake frosting (not much, my mom just wanted my opinion). So now I am done, and not hungry late at night, which is key because I know thats a major reason why I am in this situation today. Tommorow I will have more organized food/calorie totals and a better cals burned situation. I couldnt have eaten that many calories, and I burned a bunch, so I feel good.

you are doing great. You will show them. I like that you have worked out the key for you to succeed. With the exercise you get from playing sport and stuff, you are going to be so fit and healthy and thats important. YOu can do this!!!

A-teen, you CAN do this :D You have the will and attitude necessary to get it done and do it well. I think T2 said it best so I WILL tell you we are all here for you and will help all we are able :D

Have a great day!

Gatorade

Sounds like you are doing well. Birthday cake on rare occasion is okay. :) Watch out for the Gatorade. Water is a way better way to replenish, but if you are going to drink Gatorade, make sure it is not the High Performance energy drink. That stuff is 310 calories for 12 oz - more than twice as much as soda!!!

Hi Ateen, welcome to the forum!

It's great that you have a plan in place, and can work towards your goal! This forum is a teriffic place to give you the added motivational push!

Hey everybody

I have been busy this weekend, but here are 2 days worth of diaries.

Saturday
I woke up and got fully awake by around noon and headed off to the gym where I managed to run 1.5 miles at 6 miles an hour on the treadmill before i saw a classmate outside and chatted away the rest of the time. I most likely would have gone 2 miles, last winter I was able to do 4 miles in 40 minutes no prob so i want to get back to that, with a goal of 6 in 60. The rest of the day I clowned around with some buds, played a little basketball, but not enough to burn much, and watched some movies. For food i had a frozen lean cuisine pizza, a coconut bar(BOMB), leftover cake, and 2 hotdogs. An ok day, but I have seen better.

Sunday
woke up and had a piece of french toast as i am running out the door to get to my baseball double header. I caught all the first game, and caught 2 innings of game 2 while pitching the remaining 5. I would call that a pretty good leg workout. I had 4 gatoraides:eek: , so probably about 1,000 cals worth of aide. For dinner just now I had some grilled chicken and rice-a-roni(the san francisco treat). I feel much better about 2 day.

On a side note I am looking for what I am sure all you guys are looking for a food that 1. is tasty 2. low in calories and 3. will fill you up. We will call it a TRIFECTA food. So any suggestions would be great, the only one I got so far is banannas. I should probably replace my gatoraide with water, as suggested. Thanks for supporting me, and I am greatful for any suggestions and comments.
