Sport Fiber One Honey Clusters cereal

I don't know how many of you are cereal eaters, but I picked up a box of the Fiber One Honey Clusters cereal the other day at the store. I ate a bowl this morning and man this stuff is GOOD. 1 cup has 160 calories and a whopping 13 grams of fiber. Thats UNREAL! It's slightly sweet but not overbearing. Pick some up if you are looking for a good source of fiber in the morning. It's not gritty or grainy either.

Cals are good, and fiber is good.

However.

Lots of white sugar and other forms of sugar, and it mixes Sucralose (which is what Splenda is) , and it has HFC, and other ingredients I personally do not like.

If it were me, I would chuck it for something better.

No matter if tastes good or not.

Dang, I knew I'd get some flack over it, lol. Just thought it would be a decent choice for those struggling to get their fiber who don't necessarily like many other fiber containing foods. More of a "lesser of two evils choice".

Chillen, I know you are big on avoiding white sugar and I totally respect that. Your results speak for themself.

Truthfully, 6 grams of sugar isn't an awful lot.

And, I admit I do have this "thing" :))), about white sugar and "hidden sugars". I have written a lot of posts on my opinion on it, lol.

If its in moderation, dang, Chillen, it isn't gonna kill ya. ;) But....I also know the power of manipulating the almighty carbohydrate and the types of carbs that effect me certain ways. Thus, my goals and what I want, take precedent.

FiberOne (Plain) looks like a bunch of cut off worms, but its not bad, and is the better choice. Have you tried it?

Slap some bananas in it or mix it in a blender with your whey protein powder, and your set.

Yes, I actually did try it. However, it felt like it grew as I chewed it into a big 'ol wad of food and was kind of grainy. But, the taste really isn't that bad. Honestly, that's the reason I tried the honey clusters. Still an excellent source of fiber and I was looking for something with a little more taste and less grittiness. I'm going to maybe even venture out and try the raisin bran type next. We'll see! Thanks for the input brother. Your thoughts are always appreciated and respected. Take care, Greg
 
Another good option - something I do - is to mix some regular Fiber One with one of the many Kashi cereals which have a decent amount of fiber but are not quite as high as Fiber One. That way you get extra fiber and yummy cereals combined.

Controlling sugar consumption = controlling cravings and insulin, and serves one rather well, young man.

Do not forget it.

I usually throw a cup full of Fiber One (plain) in a blender, with milk and a flavor of protein powder I like, and it rocks pretty good. Or I will grind up about 1/2 cup and put it in some oatmeal for an extra fiber kick.

If you can handle refined white sugar, and normal consumption of carbs with out any side effects (such as extra water retention, retarding fat loss, and increasing food cravings), then go for it. I never had to reduce carbs during the bulk of my fat loss, but when fat percentage got low I had to watch what and when things went into my mouth more carefully, and this is where education behind the food we eat comes into play.

My point is just "understand" and "know" what you are eating, and when a problem develops, you may be able nail down the culprit in your fitness goals.

What are some good cereals, Chillen?

I'm also a cereal person. Personally, I found Kashi's GoLean Crunch
with Almond Flax a good source of Omega-3, protein and fiber.

Any thoughts?

I'm not Chillen, but here are some easy rules to use when reading the labels:

1. Look for cereals made with whole grains.

2. Look at the sugar / total carbohydrate ratio. Look for this to be as low as possible. Unfrosted shredded wheat has 0% sugar. So do plain oatmeal and other unsweetened hot cereals. Some other cereals (mostly old classics) are under 10%. Most recent "adult" cereals are closer to 30%, while most "child" cereals are more like 50% sugar.

3. Of course, avoid any cereals made with nasties like partially hydrogenated oil.

1. Steel Cut Oats, Old Fashioned Cut Oats, and Regular Cut Oats (quick cook type), in large containers.

Oatmeal is a very versatile food substance. You can mix and match many different "healthy" items to make this dang tasty and beneficial in your fitness plans.

If you are looking for ideas here, I have plenty of them.


2. Various types of Go Lean Kashi cereals (not all of them are good, look at labels)


3. Fiber-One. (60 calories per 1/2 Cup, and source of fiber)


4. Grape Nuts


GRAPE-NUTS:

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR, WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, SALT, DRIED YEAST, SOY LECITHIN. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: REDUCED IRON, NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE (SOURCE OF ZINC), VITAMIN B6, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D.

Its devoid of any "added in" sugars, and from what I have read on Lecithin, this is used in many bread products for various reasons, and isnt a bad ingredient.


5. Cream of Wheat (whole grain) (Plain no sugar added).


6. Shredded Wheat and Shredded Wheat and Bran: (NOT SUGAR TOPPED)

POST SHREDDED WHEAT ORIGINAL SPOON SIZE

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT

TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL WHEAT FLAVOR, BHT IS ADDED TO THE PACKAGING MATERIAL--If you dont like perservatives, dont select this one

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT AND WHEAT BRAN.

Alpen No Sugar Added Cereal

The original Cream of Wheat was not whole wheat. However, they now offer a whole wheat version in addition to the original version:

Mostly, the Kashi product that you have to watch out for, is any of their cereal products that have "Crunch" in the product name. The "Crunch" products have a significant increase in added sugars.
