Fatass In Training Thread

So here is my situation,

Today is the day I decide to change my life around for the better.

Over the past two years or so, I have gone from 165 pounds to 192.

I was a size 33 waist, and this was somewhat loose, now a size 36 pant is tight. My gut has gotten out of control, honestly if I let it hang out, I can't see my feet. Sad but true.

I feel winded, and disgusting. My clothes don't fit properly. I find myself buying XL shirts, when I was a comfortable medium.

On average, I eat out 3-4 times a week, mostly lunch (McDonalds, Chinese food, Pizza, etc). Now that I have been doing night shift for the past month, I have been eating out for supper more like everyday. I also find myself constantly snacking through the night out of boredom or when I am home, just because it is the thing I do when I watch a game.

Today is the day I change this all around. I am trying to implement a healthy eating plan, combined with exercise.

Let me tell you, the cravings are killing me, and it is only day 1.

So far this is what I have eaten:

1 Pack of Oatmeal, natural
A small bowl of fruit salad (home made and fresh) including Pinneapple, strawberries and canteloupe.
I had half and english cucumber with some baby carrots.
3 Apples

I have cut out all the juice I drink in the day,as well as any soda and am suplementing with water. So far I have chugged about a litre and a half of water.

This is the part that is giving me the most trouble, water is just so bland.

For exercise today, I pushed the stroller with my two kids to daycare (about 2KM). I then walked back, both were brisk walks, I started to sweat.

I may look into some sort of fitness equipment, most likely a stationary bike. I used to have a treadmill, but the impact to the knees was too much for me.

I am also going to try to jog 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week at night around 9pm after the kids are in bed.

My goal would be to drop about 10 pounds, and firm up. I want to drop the gut completely, and shape my chest back into a mans body, not these bolonga tits I am developing.

I may lift free weights, but not too much as I have a bum back.

I figured I needed a change before I end up dead at 35 of a heart attack, or can't even run around with my kids because I am such a fat ass.

Only time and discipline will tell what kind of results I can achieve.

I purchased the book "Fat Smash diet" and am going to try to follow this as a guide. I am in Phase 1 "Detox". Basically I am limited to eating 4-5 small meals a day, all fruits and veggies for the first 9 days. Gradually after that, other foods are introduced back into the diet This is supposed to clear out my system of all the garbage I have consumed, and help develop some sort of constant eating rythm.

Guys, it is hard.

Any helpful advice, or something I may be approaching incorrectly?

first of all, youve already done the hardest and most important part. Making the decision to change your life. I would like to congratulate you one this.

You've come to the right place. There are many knowledgeable and supportive people in this community.

The first bit of advice i would like to give you is to stay active in this community. It always helps to keep your mind focused on it as much as possible. Idle minds are dangerous ;) You will learn a whole bunch about fitness and how to encorportate it into your life and what works for you.

Yes, it is hard to completely change your life around. But the good news, its gets easier...a LOT easier. Once you start seeing progress, and you start reaping physical benefits, you'll become more and more engrossed in your new lifestyle.

First and foremost, (as im sure you know) the most important part is your diet. I am not familiar with the diet/book you are referring to or the credibility of the author. I'm not one to criticize, but the idea of eating a diet with no protein doesnt seem too healthy. How long does this "detox" phase last?

As far as a peice of exercise equipment, a stationary bike or an elliptical trainer i think are your best bets. I prefer the elliptical trainer, but its just a matter of preference. Youll also want to try to get lots of variety in your exercises. This serves a few purposes. For one, it keeps you motivated and prevents you from becoming bored. Variety is the spice of life. Also, it keeps your body guessing. As youll learn, your body tries really hard to adapt to whatever situation you throw at it. Eventually, your body will grow used to the same exercise day in and day out and it will slowly lose its effectiveness. You may not have to worry about this for the first few months, but eventually it will start to take its toll.

Hope this helps for starters and good luck to you.

Thanks for the reply.

The detox phase is 9 days. Here is a link to the book

I am not one for "dieting" but the book came highly recommended to me from a couple of friends who have used it as a guide.

I have also been reading the Weight loss FAQ on these boards, and it has provided me with some useful tips.

I do find it somewhat suspect to eliminate everything but fruit and veggies.

Do you think this is a step in the wrong direction?

i can only tell you whats worked for me. I started with a macronutrient mix of 40%/30%/30% of protein/fat/carbs. and ive been sticking with it since then. It's worked for me. I'm down 20lbs or so since i started. I;ve got a long way to go till my goal but like i said, its worked thus far for me.

Everybody is different. I'm not a nutritionist so i cant say for sure that it is "unhealthy". If you are taking in fewer calories than you burn ina day, you will see results quickly especially if you are just starting out.

I personally think focusing on a diet that has rules and stages is difficult and limiting. this is just my opinion. It may be a good guide to follow some of the ideas in there. But I've never found a diet book that has all the answers. Just read the threads in the nutrition forum here and try to take everything in. Its a lot of info, but eventually stuff will start falling into place for you.

There is no exact science to any of this, everybody is different and your body may react completely differently to something than other peoples. You just gotta play and tweak until you find something that works for you.

bland water

My boss at work has been trying to lose weight, and he also cut out all fruit juices and found that cutting fructose really helped. he also finds water too hard to drink a lot of, so he's been mixing in just a bit of orange juice. Just enough to get the taste, and it helps him drink a ton of water every day. Just a thought.

Best of luck to you with everything.

thats not a bad idea. i used to be the same way, couldnt stand water cause it just didnt do anything for me. Now i find myself craving it. Its addictive ;)

My weight is all in my gut, other than that, some training should just tone and firm me up a little.

Are there any exercise that target gut reduction, or does the fat come off equally all over the body?

my love handles were very annoying to me and no isolation would make them dissapear. They only went away after i started eating more frequent meals, (im eating more for bulk), and drinking over a gallon of water/day. i didnt even do any exercise for them to go away: no cardio; nothing. my diet did it i guess. : )
