Fat March

im watching this show on abc. its really funny in my opinion.
its about overweight people walking across the country step by step day by day. its kinda like a competition.
anyway,
they had to do a 12.7 mile walk one day and there were competitors who were like
"oh man, this is complete hell!",
"i might just die",
"the best way to sum up a 12.7 mile walk is: AHHHHHHHHH!",
"i absolutely hate this. my feet hurt, my legs hurt, my whole body hurts!",
"omg, not another hill!"

and im not really critisizing them that it is hard for them, but its funny how the show presents it.
it has really dramatic, hardcore music playing like you would hear while your watching 300 or something while it shows them walking.

i guess its a real hard workout for them :)

Strap 250 lbs to your back and walk 12.7 miles - then get back to us on the experience. :)

not quite the same thing at all-but ok.
as long as you pay for my chyropractic physical therapy afterward :D

the point was that their performance ability is far below par.

From where I sit it is the same thing. The point being that walking with that kind of weight is an effort - I was just suggesting walking a mile (well, ok 12.7 miles to be exact) in their shoes.

overweight peoples joints and muscles have had time to get acustomed to their heavy weight. If you suddenly put on 250lbs it would NOT be the same. And you would have to put weight on overall not just on your back in a backack.

I see all your points (ProteinboyKarky/Stingo)...I think Proteinboy is mainly trying to say that the show plays up the fact that it IS a struggle for them to walk all that way.

I know it's hard for a thin person, who's never been overweight, to imagine the struggles of a bigger person. I've been guilty of it myself, but I don't think Karky is trying to be insensitive...

Edit: oops, I thought the OP was karky, but I've since changed it to Protein boy

Of course there performance ability is going to be subpar--especially if they didnt do any exercising before the show. Thus, there level of performance is going to be on par with---and in conjunction with--this past history. Their body is mainly accustomed to hauling this weight around in a "Normal" application sense rather than in a training or exercising environment. Their current attempts to change is still reflecting this past history---until there attempts remain conistant enough to cause change in the recent history. Then the recent history will begin to erase the history involved in creating the situation there in.

Its sort of like a starting point. And, yes, there going to have prices to pay due to there past history in their current attempt to change. Along there journey if were talking 200lbs (and one is healthy), they knew they were overweight (and possibly had other bodily problems because of this) but still over ate.

Now it gets converted to the opposite: Now they have to eat less and excercise more, knowing this is the route to lose unwanted fat, and their body is not used to it, and is going to scream back at them with some bodily function pains.

hmm.. I diden't say that in your quote :p

LOL, I know. for some reason I thought you were the OP so I just cut and pasted it cuz I used the quick reply option...I edited my post. Sorry!

Generally speaking, the same speeches would be heard from people who never walked 12.7 miles in their life. I just think that due to the obvious appearance differences, it is easy to assume that they cannot walk that great of a distance. There are plenty of overweight people, however, who can walk great distances without feeling tired.

Sadly, I hate these types of shows. They emphasize more on physical activities to solve obesity, rather than on the nutritional aspect. I haven’t seen a single show that highlights nutrition, and if they do, it is usually shown on some education channel early in the morning way before anyone actually watches. Sure it’s “funny” to see a really large person try to run a mile without complaining, but it isn’t so “funny” when they go home and try to battle with food only to lose. Most people who are obese blame lack of physical activities, rather than on their nutritional choices. I heard it a million times, “I only had one.” I believe it, and then I believe they had “only one” of something else, ten times over.

On shows like Celebrity Fit Club, they seem to emphasize on proper diet / nutrition, but the show rarely focuses on actually explaining to potential viewers on what choices to make. Even their websites have some good tips, but they rarely explain or show explains of what they mean by proper diet / nutrition.

I would like to see a show solely dedicated to the nutritional aspect of American culture. Perhaps if they show a rather obese person, who slims down to the proper weight, would wake up most people to realize it’s not about lack of physical activities, but rather poor nutritional choices.

Due to the fact that this is possibly the worst summer ever for television I have reduced myself to watching this show. I also watch Inside Brookhaven Obesity Clinic. My wife and I will look through the guide and say "damn it! there aren't even any fat shows on!"

Fat March does talk about nutrition, but it would be pretty boring if they focused on that for the whole time slot.

The thing that amazes me is how entitled some of the people are. On that Brookhaven show the facility bought an 800 lb man a special custom wheelchair ($9000) that would accommodate him and he promptly quit the program because he didn't like the food there. I mean even if you think the food is terrible, isn't it worth getting used to it to save your life? People actually enroll there then order in pizza and Chinese food

I'm actually trying to check some of my attitudes about obesity /obese people because I think food addiction is a real thing. Who would freely choose to live that way?

Yea, I totally agree about the boring part. But they can make it so much more exciting if they actually used an ex-Marine recon guy or something to train these people on nutrition. As for the 800 lbs man who left, I'm pretty sure he thinks that it's because of his lack of physical activities that landed him to where he is now. Most people don't believe food will make you fat (in large excess, but again they believe they don’t eat “that much”)... amazingly.

i think some of the contestants on the show are just huge babieswhen it comes to health.
and unfortunantly for them, they dont get cheese with their whine.
they have probably eaten terribly and hardly exercised their whole life and their capacity for physical work is pitiful.
yet,
i have seen and met overweight kids who can play dance dance revolution(dancing game) for hours on end at a level far more intense than walking.

i dont think (some of them) the contestants are mentally strong when it comes to fitness at all.
nobody said it was going to be easy losing that blimp they call a belly. :D

The Judgement of others and/or being overly judgemental of others can cause internal and external poison, and hamper true circumference of clear vision. Does one look at another and truely see? Maybe, if they were able to remove the spec from their own eye, but this isnt possible, because we all have specs in our eye.

We can never adequately judge the lives of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation. It's one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it's another to think that yours is the only path.

Sometimes judgements prevent us from seeing the good and the beauty that lies beyond the persons appearance. Sometimes judging yourself though someone else's eyes gives a different version than what you think of yourself in the first place

Persons come in all shapes and sizes. Just because one does not adhere to health and fitness, and may be over weight, doesnt make them bad persons: we all have bad qualities no matter what we do as we are human. When you make personal judgements about other persons, just remember, another person can make a judgement about you, and maybe just as harsh, because he or she may not just share the same value system as you, and percieve YOU as ugly thought you see yourself as beautiful. An open mind is a terrible mind to waste.............

Im out of this Debate Mate, and Skate to Create the heart-Rate of togetherness faster than one's metabolic Rate....................

Wish ALL...........BEST!

i didnt know we were debating?

lol i wasnt attempting to adequately judge their lives, make conclusions about their quality as a human, or disregard their unnknown potential to be great people.

i simply said that some of them whine and complain far more than a mentally tough person would.

i believe my above post was misinterpreted as an attack on overweight people.

and i totally agree with you chillen.
people should not be judged just because of their appearance.

but when their actions(quitting) and words(whining) show their true inner personality, that is why i came to the conclusion that some are mentally and physically unprepared.

I don't think we're actually "joking" anyone here. I for one cannot, as I am overweight, but I can say that I lost quite a lot and I believe I can make several points about this show based on my own personal experience. I think the main point in this thread is that it's sad to see these types of shows because it emphasizes on physical attributes of a large person, rather than the mental aspect, which is where the battle truly happens. Indeed, I think shows such as these should be banned from TV as it focuses on a very serious problem by making a mockery out of large people. I think a lot of people felt better after walking the 12.7 miles, and perhaps they will take the time to educate themselves into living the better life, however, I think most people who walked the 12.7 miles go home and eat a box of pizza or whatever and totally make their attempts in vain.

Indeed, there is nothing funny about someone battling the fight of food. It is one thing that no one will understand, and the one thing that only you can defeat. It's not about how many miles you can run/walk. It’s about the attempt to make yourself mentally disciplined enough to put down whatever you’re eating. Anyone can get up and start walking, it’s what nature intended for us to do, but to actually stop eating in excess, that takes total discipline, and it is what most people lack training in.
