Weight-Loss Extreme Cravings for Sugar/Chocolate...

Heya,

Not sure if this is the right place to put this post in... I need HELP! I'm 5'4 and weigh around 128-131 pounds (it bounces and I haven't checked lately) and I am currently on a 1200-1400 calorie diet (since maintaining my weight according to a calculator = 1700 calories)... so technically at 1200 a day I lose 1 pound at the end of the week (but things aren't so perfect so I leave room for 200 calories more so I don't kill myself with guilt)

Lately I'm having this EXTREME CRAVINGS for sugar/chocolate - I have always been a chocolate freak but since trying to regulate my food I haven't had an actual chocolate bar in over 9 months (before I used to eat 2+ a day)... no sodas/juices or anything with sugar in them (did drink "vitamin" water or other water with sucralase flavoring)

I get cravings all the time that can last 5 min to hours but normally they aren't that strong and eventually leave

But 4 days ago.... dunno I went nuts (literary speaking) - it went over the roof and I couldn't control it - I couldn't sleep for hours and I went all anxious... I drove to the bakery and had 4 pastries... then the next day I had stuff fromo Tim Hortons (totaling 1390 calories, 60 grams of fat) - so I ended skipping dinner both days and walking for 2 hours home (on the Tim Hortons day not the first)

Right now these cravings are still there - so for the past 2 days I have been gobbling down diet pepsi/coke bottle after bottle! I literary speaking bought 6 big bottles of diet soda and I have one with me when I am at home (finals are coming so I’m studying most of the time)…. So whenever I get the urge again I just drink from the bottle and it helps the urge calm down a bit (which is weird since it does not have real sugar in them)

So…. Diet soda 0 calories? Is that true? What are the cons of gobbling down diet soda - there has to be something? I know there's aspartame which doesn't have the greatest long-term potential side effects. *by the way this is the first time in my entire life that I ever drank diet soda – it doesn’t even taste that good*

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? What can I do to get rid of this? I hope it is a temporary thing!! I was thinking of going to my doctor (after finals week in 2 weeks) but I think he will think I’m crazy – heck I think I’m crazy (I doubt that I am lacking sugar since I do confuse lots of fruits)

Again sorry if this is not the right place to put it in the forums - and thanks for any feedback I can get

Be as cruel as you like - I like honesty in people so I'll take whatever I get!

Bloating...

some people have odd reactions to the artifical sweeteners... there's a thread here that has links to a few different articles that point out that diet sodas CAN contribute to weight gain IN SOME PEOPLE... :D then again - anything can contribute to weight ain in some people..I personally don't like sodas because to the bloating factor...

Was this binge.. or whatever it was - a result of stress because of upcoming finals or something else? have you been feeling deprived of certaint hings.. there's no reason to not include chocolate in a sensible meal plan....

Would 1 pastry have satisfied you? If it hits again - get 1 - enjoy it and savor it -and if youwant antoher -have it.. but try to avoid getting 4 at once..

I have a hidden stash of top quality chocolate so that if I have a craving that demands to be satisfied I know I can have a little bit that I can savour. So far I haven't needed it ;)

This binge sounds a bit scary to me. I don't think it's physiological, either. It sounds like you have something on your mind that makes the sugar and chocolate so appealing. If it was just a simple craving for chocolate, then one bit would be enough. You'd be able to savor the taste and enjoy it, but this sounds to me like one was just the starting place. I agree with just avoiding the urge for now. Drink the diet soda or whatever gets you through, but look for what's causing it. If it's finals, you can deal with that. If it's something else, try to figure out what it is. Just my unprofessional 2 cents.

If you tried eat one piece of dark chocolate, 70% cacoa...? You would eat like 3.5 ounce or no more than 100grams...sometimes, this will help you, I think.

I think that you really need to plan your diet so that it's more realistic for you. If you know you crave chocolate and are going to keep having these cravings, then plan a small chocolate snack into your diet so that you keep on it without having eating binges. Like Susana mentioned, I would try snacking on a tiny bit of darker chocolate that has less sweeteners.

I currently have the same problem. I have no problem stopping after a piece of pizza, but definitely a big problem stopping at one cookie or one piece of cake. Lately I've just been allowing myself to binge on that kind of thing once a week or so, but I always end up feeling gross and guilty afterwards just like you do and really limit myself harshly the next day. I think I'm going to really try to practice a lot of self control and just try to train myself to be satisfied with one of something so that I stop swinging from complete binge to really healthy eating, but am more level. Hopefully that will help.
