Exercising the core is something I have been asked about often on the forum, many of the traditional exercises for the core cause or aggravate injury or are simple not targeting the core in the way you think they do.
Dr McGill has a lot of research to his name, and much of his stuff has been referenced in the exercise science degree I am currently doing. Of course there are conflicting research papers for some of his stuff, but these particular exercises are highly recommended and can still be done with lower back problems.,

This article looks at 3 recommended core exercises. These are all bodyweight only exercises which can be done at home without equipment.
