Iv started to do cycling in my local gym to try and drop weight. I'm currently doing 25 minutes of cycling at quite a high tension. I was just wondering if putting it at a lighter tension and cycling for 45-50 minutes would be better for sheer weight loss and possibly be a bit easier on my knees which can sometimes be quite sore not long after a cycle. Many thanks in Advance.

If your knees are a problem then yes lower the resistance level and see how well your knees handle it but for calorie burn maintaining a high cadence with high resistance will use more calories than lower cadence and longer time on the lower resistance level.

if your cadence is increased when lowering resistance then your calorie burn will be similar.
