Excersize is becoming excruciatingly boring...

Hello,

I started working out again at the Y about 2 weeks ago. It was OK for then, but now I am dreading to go, and even slack off from going because it is just so darn boring. Even when I have tunes playing I can't really concentrate on the music because of the exhaustion of walking on the treadmil. I would much much rather be at home practicing bass. Or watching a film or fixing up my website. Does anyone have any zen advice, or know an ancient chinese locker room secret to shed the boredom? Or at least make it so I can drag myself there every day anyway? I guess part of it is, I have been going but I see no difference in my weight or tolerence on the treadmil. I can only walk about 3.3 mph for about 40 minuts and I am pooped!! I couldn't jog, or walk faster to save my life. It's not because I am too tired or sweaty, but because my leg muscles just hurt too much to go on... Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help at all would be appreciated!

maybe you shouldn't be going every day if it's that exhausting for you? Give yourself every other day, and let your muscles recover a bit, and find fun stuff to do on your off days that get you moving.

Lunges with your bass... or using the bass as a weight machine :) over head presses, etc...

That's a pretty good idea, Mal! Hopefully, I will be able to go every day again when I can finaly build some darn muscle...

LMAO! Bass lunges- I could also try headbanging to work my neck and back muscles... Kidding ;-)

Maybe you can change your workout around. One day you could do the treadmill, next day the bike, elliptical machine, etc.

Or you can switch machines every 15 minutes. You can also incorporate weight training or participate in a kickboxing class or aerobics class.

I couldn't do treadmill, but walking my neighborhood in the morning is nice. I get fresh air, I vary my route to take in new scenery, got the tunes going... all in all a much better experience than the treadmill.

don't work yourself that hard~!! take it a step down so that you wont be pooped and will be able to do more tomorrow~ even it out, dont' make yourself pooped one day so you can't tomorrow~ do a little everyday~ later on when you loose weight and stuff you'll get used to walking faster and longer~ but this takes TIME~~

do they have TVs at your gym? or maybe you could bring a friend~ or buy a psp like I did~

or learn how to get lost in thought while on the treadmill~ usually when i workout i do it at my own pace so I can still think straight~ and think so much a/b something (usually for me it's a storyline for a manga I'm making or something) that it makes time fly~

try listening to dance music (if you like it)~ walk to the beat of the music~ it's entertainign to me~ =P

and maybe you could try some things at home for fun (for instence... I just made a thread on parapara and techpara that maybe you could check out ^_~)~ change of atmosphere is usually refreshing~

if it seems like you don't have the energy to do much at the gym then think a/b if you did.. one day you WILL have energy at the gym if you keep it up~

do not treat your workouts like a chore~ treat them as activities~ and make the best out of them~<3

newaze~ hope I helped~

all I could really do is echo what everyone else said... Going to the gym everyday is great if you have a program... during the winter months I'll do lower body one day and upper body the next. If you're hurting, let your body recover. This is very important... this could be the reason why you aren't seeing results yet.

As for the bordom, don't be afraid to mix it up... try different cardio machines. Working out with a partner is also a great way to keep the motivation up.

Hello!

KasumiNeko- Your post was very helpful. I often try and write out stories in my head, or think of bass melodies I can figure out when I get home. I just am a bit confused on what is enough. I usually go 3.3 MPH for 40 minuts, sometimes an hour and I just walk myself silly! I am very curious- What did you start out doing at the gym when you first went? Also, how long did it take you to start pushing yourself harder and not overwork? The reason I ask you so much is because what you did has obviously worked for you, you look spectacular!!!

Miklikes2bike- Thanks so much. Perhaps that is what I should do. Cardio one day, then weights the next. I only use machines. I am too shy to work out in the weights section with all the big macho football team guys! I am also too weak to do an elliptical... But the day i can do that, I will be one happy camper! :)

Thank you all so so much- You are all extremely helpful and inspiring. May you all experience beauty always!!

well~ on the treadmill I started doing maybe.. 2.8-3.0 for 20-30 minutes~

if i felt i could do more without overworking myself i moved it up a level~ mayeb to around 3.0-3.3~

over a year and a half's time~ I do anywhere from 4.0-6.0 for 40-45 minutes~

but this takes much time~ =.= took meh a year and a half~ o_O

just simply listen to your body~!! if it feels it should stop or rest or take it a level down~ then do so~ and you'll be able to do more within time~ and without feeling like crap when you workout~
and don't feel afriad to push yourself either~ if you feel you can do more, do it!

you don't have to overwork yourself~ remember~ the bigger you are, the faster the weight falls off~ and it's easier to drop pounds~(that's how it was for me anyways)

the smaller you get the more you'll be able to do and it will even out~

goodluck~ =3

do anything you feel you can you~!! it's HIGHLY suggested that you do some sort of weight training after maybe 20-30 minutes of cardio~ it will prevent loose skin and help burn fat faster~ also~ you can focus on what parts of your body you want to work on~

agn with the weighttraining.. do not overwork yourself and lift somethign too heavy~ sore muscles prevent a good workout the next day~ and b/c they are sore DOES NOT mean that you got a good workout~ it's your bodys way of telling you that you've done too much~ it's sore b/c your muscles have torn~ dont' tear them~ Dx

and with the shyness~ I used to be very much like that at the gym~ if anybody says anything a/b the way you look~ or if they give you some kind of look that makes you uncomofrtable~ then at least you can say you're doing something a/b it!! and that you have more of a purpose to be at that gym~ and more stregnth to think a/b yourself and put that before compitition~

ppl at your gym will notice if you're making progress~ numbers of ppl at my gym have noticed my weight loss~ the same ppl who I thought were looking at me and thinking I was pathetic~ now look up to me~

and if anybody gives you crap then you can proove them wrong too~

night when the weights get boring I get out my medicine ball and play catch with it for a little while. your still lifting and burning calories but its different.

The problem is that you're using a treadmill! I think they're evil machines. Far too many people think that exercise has to be done at a gym. Not so! Fitness is my LIFE and I almost exclusively exercise outside of the gym. I only lift weights at the gym.
I don't know what your climate is or what is available where you live. It's dreadfully hot here, so I either exercise first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Here are some ideas for getting outside!

Hiking
Walking on trails
Walking on streets
Jogging in either place, or on a beach if one is available
Kayak or canue
Roller blading
Biking
Tennis
Swimming
Parks--maybe just trails for walking and jogging, but some also have exercise stations
Basketball
Join a sport's legue in a sport you like, such as soccar, volleyball, basketball, etc.

Whatever exercise you do, start out slow and you will build up. People often find that they can do more, go further and go faster when they exercise outdoors than when they use equipment indoors. Bordeom makes it FEEL harder.
