I know long time no see :p

I thought this would be interesting to see. According to stats, over 40% of Americans believe the Earth is no more than 10 000 years old; presumably most believing humans lived with dinosaurs. What a disgrace!

who did they ask Matt? who was the poll audience?

Hey, they asked people from the USA. who? well I can't remember, don't have the book with me now, but it was one of the biggest statistic organisation so quite accurate indeed!

I hope this thread isn't just meant for yank bashing

But yeah, I find it frightening that there are people in this world that still believe in God

This is an interesting question, because what the question insist is that there is proof that one or the other disproves each other. If you believe in evolution, then there isn't a god. But if you believe in creationism, then you believe in god. There is no middle ground, sadly. I suppose the one fact that dismiss each other is that evolution attempts to say that we're created by a freak accident that is an anomaly whereas creationism supports that we were created for a reason.

Personally I don't see how evolution cancels the concept of "god." According to the bible, god created the earth in seven days. The odd ball thing about this is that the order of creation closely matches to what scientists believe are the steps in evolution from cell to humans today. To say the least, at the time when the bible was written, people didn't understand the concepts of "millions" or "infinity." Think of this, when I went to the store the other day, the cashier accidentally put in 5 dollars instead of 2 dollars, and she was unable to determine how much I should get back from 1.62 cents. With that said, how can you expect someone thousands of years ago, who probably could only count to 7, even begin to understand concepts like millions or even billions. So by using the seven day creation system, which is easy to remember, people could begin to grasp concepts.

One fact that we cannot deny is that we're all merely a system of cells that some how "thinks." We were all created by "chance" and to attempt to explain that is just a bit mind boggling. Since we were created with things made from this world, it's easy to explain how we're made by this world. The reason why, or what caused it to happen, we cannot explain. For example, who defines the rules of this world? For example, gravity, who defines it? Was it defined because of an accident? Or was it defined as a result of a set of rules? If things were created by merely "accidents" then it would mean that rules and systems can be changed. So far, no one can explain a single concept that defines everything. Once that can be established, then perhaps we can move to understand what caused us to appear as we did.

No yank bashing, and not necessarily about God, but the fact that sooo many people don't believe in evolution is crazy; which says a lot about us as a "Smart" race ay? and the power of institutions (such as churches and mosques?) to negatively influence. But I this isn't about religion, purely about evolution.

And dallen, there IS an option for evo and belief in God, it's in the middle!

Dallen, well if God really did use the 7 day system to help people understand (not that I think it does), you'd think he'd interven now - like he supposebly did very often many years ago in the Bible - and let everyone know what he really meant.

And alas! just what I thought someone would say.

Evolution is not chance! it is the very opposite! It is the non-random selection - via natural selection - of random mutations that have produced all the living things we see today.

Isn't it cool how the dolphin is a mammal because it use to live on land. It propels its fins up and down unlike the side to side of fish, because that is what mammal like lions do with their tails. In fact, you can still see the small hind legs in whales, which were originally onced used by their ancestors on land to which they are now descended.

That's what people would think, however, I think god would have more to worry about than to come down and say, "Hold it! I didn't create the world in 7 days, now you understand millions, and billions, that's how long I created. Well see ya guys later, I'ma gonna hang out at my crib for the next few million years. You guys take care. TTYL and BFF!"

That brings the next question about "god" concept is that people want to say, "Well if there is a god, then how come he doesn't do this, or that?" And that's easy to say, because god wouldn't do anything at all. I found that a lot of times if you've been reading these forums at all. ;)

And just FYI, god didn't intervene a lot in the new testament. In the old testament, and the new one, Jesus came down, and supposedly now god no longer needs to come down because all your sins are forgiven. In the old testament, in order to talk to god, you were suppose to sacrifice an offering (usually a lamb) and god would come down and be like, "You called?" But now that Jesus came and went, it allowed us to be forgiven and god no longer needs to come down. In the old testament, god had connection with people, up until the new one. The only time god came down and directly talked to someone is for people who were recruited by the disciples to spread the word. Their objective has been fulfilled, and god no longer needs to directly come down. If there is a god, and you died today, and he would say to you, "But why did you need me to talk to you when you already know what I told you?" Because you do know about god, back then, people didn't so god need to tell people to spread the words.

I can't vote...none of those fit my belief system.

But the Earth is definitely way, way older than 10,000 years.

There are still people that truly believe the Earth is not round/spherical...so anything's possible.

Think about the median person who represents 'average intelligence'...50% of the population is dumber than that guy.

I'll be following this thread, so keep arguments to the point and no bashing, be it of religion or something else. You can of course make arguments against religion, evolution, what ever, but no "OMFG RELIGION PEOPLE ARE ST00PIDZ!". If I see that it will result in an immediate temp ban without any warning.

And people, if anyone steps over the line, don't hesitate to report the post or just PM me.
Happy debating!

I love it when your dominant :valintines:

Have anyone actually read Darwin's theory of evolution? You can pick up a copy for like 5 bucks. If I remember right, a lot of Darwin's theory are based primarily on religious foundation. It wasn't until modern times where people say evolution disproves the existence of god, but offer no other reason behind it. I mean we follow natural laws and orders of this universe, so science can explain that easily. That doesn't mean there isn't a god.

Let's make an example. Let's say you play a video game, and something happen in it that the developers didn't intend. Like in Super Mario where you can find that one infinite coin box. Does that automatically mean that the developers are disproved because of the fact that someone discovered a truth in it that is bounded by the laws of the created world? And that the software was written by a natural selection?

Also, from what I gather about natural selection, it's not that you select what features to keep, it's as a species what is better to survive in the wild. It has nothing to do with being dumb or smart, and in some cases being smart is worst. For example, let's say someone is naturally a better looker than others, but have the smarts of a 3rd grader and works at Mc D. He has 20 children. That by extension is natural selection because he has features that in our species separate as good or bad, and he has continued our species by 20.

In the wild, natural selection just means being lucky. A recent example of natural selection are these butterflies in England when they started burning fossil fuel. These butterflies would be born with black features or white features. Slowly the white ones died because birds can spot them easily. However, the black ones lived because they can hide. The white ones were no smart or dumber than the black ones, they were just white in colour and stood out which caused them to be naturally selected for extinction.

LOL lei...
hahah......that was great.

i believe in God because of his tremendous love.
even if you do not believe in God, Jesus really did exist as the Bible depicts. there is a lot of evidence for that. whether or not you believe he was the son of God is crutial, but even if you do not, its hard to deny that his philosophy(outlook on life) was not spectacular.

he preached mercy, grace, and unconditional love. not only that, but he lived it.
it is better to be humble than prideful.
it is more blessed to give than to recieve.
he taught mercy and forgiveness instead of strife and contempt
the old covenant is over, and his wrath is now quelled because the ultimate sacrafice has been made.
this gives people great joy and hope

the things Jesus has said and done are miraculous!
i have seen tremendous change in people's lives because of christ. i believe Jesus changes a person from the inside and it is for the better.
now, i am not naiive to the fact that christians still mess up. however, i believe Jesus' teachings are perfect, pure, and are very helpful for people to live loving lives.

i dont mind if you refuse to believe God. however, i would be very glad if you recieved him.

but isnt it a great philosophy to live in love as Jesus preached?

the two greatest commands that Jesus taught were, "love God, and love people. All of Moses' Teachings and the Prophets depend on these two commandments."

i believe following Jesus produces much more fruit than believing the world created itself(no creator)
